A good no-nonsense volume

I bought this for my daughters. It is a good introductory version of the Gita. I have read quite a number of editions, and sadly do not remember which were the most interesting to me and why. This particularly volume is not as rich with respect to imagery as many of the others. I wanted to be careful about how some volumes use artistic liberties in an attempt to teach the reader. The reason is that the dialogue between Arjuna and Krishna can lead one to discover for themselves its allegorical wisdom A process of self discovery. This addition at the very least, does no harm. In a couple places it used the word "individual," in a way in which I suggested that they interpret it as 'ego' instead.

About the Author
Steve is a life-long teacher. He has taught at a variety of age levels from middle school science enhancement programs through graduate-level coursework. He served in the United States Air Force for 20 years and spent approximately half of that time as a faculty member at the United States Air Force Academy. Following military retirement, he began a second academic career at the University of Wyoming as an assistant professor. He now serves as a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Associate Dean for Academic Programs. He is planning on teaching into his 80s and considers himself a student-first teacher. Most importantly, he has two grand beagles, Rory and Romper, fondly referred to as the girls.

Jason Kridner is the cofounder of the BeagleBoard.org Foundation, a US-based 501(c) nonprofit corporation that provides education and promotes the design and use of open source software and hardware in embedded computing. As a more than 20-year veteran of Texas Instruments and the semiconductor industry, Kridner has deep insights into future of electronics, pioneering both TI's and the semiconductor industry's open source efforts and engagements with open hardware. Definitely worth the read...

As a disclaimer, I am a partner in a retained executive search firm, and after reading Purple Squirrel, I felt like I knew just about everything discussed in this book and I felt that it is more directed to the entry - middle level candidates. That being said, for someone who is at the entry - middle level management stage in their career and looking to distinguish themselves amongst their peers, this book is quite helpful.

Unlike another review I read about this book, I appreciated the narrative and found it easy to read and well delivered.

Will this book find you your next position/career? Yes and No; information is only as good as you make it. This book will help you find your next position if you actually put in the work, implement what is taught and go after it. If you read it and then don't put the effort in that it takes to stand out, then you won't.

I enjoyed the book and believe it is a good guide to finding that next position.

Rehash of other job huntng books ... Get 2hr Job Search Instead.

I read the WHOLE thing ... and no real advice for getting jobs. The author breaks down searching into two parts. Things to help you PURSUE a job (the way most job seekers look for work) and GETTING PURSUED (what to do to stand out).

Like the title implied, I was hoping for more of the latter. However, by the page count, 11% of the book is about motivation, 73% is about traditional resumes/job searching. Leaving only 26% about ways to stand out. However, these pages are short stories about successful job seekers using two strategies: Use LinkedIn, Have a presentation portfolio with work samples to prove you can do the job (present from it during the interview).

Really, "The 2-Hour Job Search: Using Technology to Get the Right Job Faster" is a much better book with a proven strategy.

How to get the jobs coming to you!

Unemployed? Looking for a new opportunity? Read "Purple Squirrel."

Employed? Unhappy with your current role or company? Career stalled? Read "Purple Squirrel."

According to Manpower, the largest staffing firm in the world, there are 80 million unhappy employed people who would love to have a new career opportunity. All most people know to do in regard to a "job search" is to (1) network; (2) fire off résumé after résumé to online postings on the Internet; and then (3) hope!

Mike, with his powerful experience as both a 3rd party recruiter and as a member of the Google executive recruiting team, shows you there is a better way!

But first, what on earth is a "purple squirrel" anyway? In "headhunting" circles we use the term "purple squirrel" to define a candidate who must meet a very narrowly defined set of criteria to be considered for a hiring company's job opening. In fact, the criteria established by the hiring company is usually so narrowly defined that it's nearly impossible to find a candidate who actually meets the job criteria!

So what does this have to do with you? In a word, everything!

During his illustrious career, Mike has read thousands of résumés, interviewed hundreds and hundreds of people and has dissected what separates the top 25% of the talent pool from all of the rest.

"Most job seekers spend (countless) hours hunting for work and are lucky to receive even a handful of responses from interested employers," Mike explains in his book. "Others update a few online profiles and magically the phone starts ringing."

"Have you ever wondered why a given résumé compels instant interview requests, while others produce almost no response at all?" he asks. "Or, why some people consistently convert interviews into job offers?"

About half of Purple Squirrel addresses the tactics for finding a job now. The book contains a plethora of proven executables and deliverables that, if implemented properly, will not only allow you to "up your game," it will also enable you to stand out from the crowd, land interviews and get hired far more quickly than most. The remaining half of the book is for those of you who may be suffering the "Sunday night blues," i.e., dreading the arrival of Monday mornings when you're in a job you have come to loathe, and want to explore other career opportunities. Mike literally walks you, the reader, through the process of what it takes to become what he calls an "opportunity magnet."

"The real purpose of this book," he says, "is to guide you to the point where you can stop being a job seeker and start being a sought-after resource."

In other words, Mike shows you how to position yourself as the elusive "purple squirrel," how to brand yourself as someone within the talent pool who is--or can become!--a highly-sought-after, quite rare species.

As a "headhunter" myself, someone who is in the job market each and every business day dealing with both candidates and hiring companies, I know what it takes for a candidate to succeed in today's extremely competitive job market. About the Author
Yoshitaka Amano is a Japanese artist, character designer, illustrator and a theatre and film scenic designer and costume designer. He first came into prominence in the late 1960s working on the anime adaptation of Speed Racer. Amano later became the creator of iconic and influential characters such as Gatchaman, Tekkaman:The Space Knight, Hutch the Honeybee, and Casshan. In 1982 he went independent and became a freelance artist, finding success as an illustrator for numerous authors, and worked on many best selling novels such as The Guin Saga and Vampire Hunter D. He is also known for his commissioned illustrations for the popular video-game franchise Final Fantasy.
Since the 1990s Amano has been creating and exhibiting paintings featuring his iconic retro pop icons in galleries around the world, primarily painting on aluminium box panels with acrylic and automotive paint. He is a 5 time winner of the Seiun Award, and also won the 1999 Bram Stoker Award for his collaboration with Neil Gaiman, Sandman:The Dream Hunters.
Amano's influences include early Western comic books, art nouveau, and Japanese woodblock prints. In early 2010, he established Studio Devaloka, a film production company. The author lives in Tokyo, Japan & New York, N.Y..

I own the other books in this series and I love them all. This one is a little different in that it includes a lot of Amano's pencil work, which was nice to study. I would recommend this to anyone interested in FF or in Art in general. There is some really good reference art in this book.

Contemporary mosaic art has an almost limitless variety of style and form, ranging from flat surfaces to three-dimensional objects. This album displays the work of 45 international artists with brief descriptions of their lives and artistic philosophies. As a source of ideas, it is similar to Martin Cheek's Mosaics Design Sourcebook (LJ 10/15/98), with a broader range of styles and motifs. There are no projects, but the mosaic works are beautifully photographed with detailed close-ups as well as views of entire pieces, many of which are outdoors or are architectural features in buildings. Glass mosaicists take note and check out this book. Authors Locktov and Clagett have put together an impressive portfolio of artists working with mosaics in glass, ceramic, stone, and mixed media. Despite the varied materials, the section of "Mosaic Design" devoted to glass and mixed media mosaics is so rich in inspiring works, it will drive home even further the notion that the resurgence of mosaics is the most exciting thing happening in flat glass today. The group of glass artist featured includes Erin Adams (whose work is featured on page 6 in this issue), Ellen Blakely, whose preferred medium is shattered safety glass salvaged from vandalized bus shelters and store windows, Felice Nittolo of Ravenna, Italy, who works in Byzantine styled mosaics, Lucio Orsoni of the Orsoni factory who specializes in the use of smalti (small, glass mosaic elements) and Diana Maria Rossi, whose highly faceted surfaces have a strong emotional impact. An inspiring collection

This is an interesting, inspiring and beautifully presented book of work from mosaic artists around the world. There is so much variety in terms of style, technique, materials, and colour, and I very much like the fact that there are many photos of works in their entirety as well as pieces showing closeups of the same work in detail. There are generally between four and six pages for each artist, showcasing their work and talking a little bit about their artistic background, their technique used for certain pieces and their inspirations, all of which I found fascinating and brought me to a greater understanding of how the piece was created.
I admit that not everything in the book is to my own personal tastes: my preferences lean towards the more colourful. Among my favourite mosaicists in this collection are Erin Adams, whose compositions are based on intricately patterned oriental rugs; Gary Stephens, whose weird and wonderful designs feature brightly coloured fruit, fish, frogs, and ukelele-playing mermen (!); Linda Beaumont, especially for the assortment of objects she incorporates into mosaics; and Candace Bahouth, who I feel has a great eye for colour and shape. Nonetheless, there is a lot of creativity and enthusiasm evident in all the work in the book, whatever your tastes.
It also has possibly the best introduction I have ever read in a book about mosaic: "Mosaic design is a fascinating art based on paradoxes that must be embraced. Among these are the pieces, multiple objects of simplicity fused into a singular, complex wholeness; the irregularity that springs from deliberation; and, more often than not, the creation that is wrought from destruction. Such paradoxes are put into context by the mosaicist when the principles of other visual arts are applied. By shaping tesserae like a sculptor, choosing colors like a painter, and weaving patterns like a fiber artist, the mosaicist presents his or her vision."
What a wonderful way to introduce what mosaic is all about! I also feel that there is just the right balance between text and photographs - enough to enhance understanding, but not so much as to detract from the art itself. I recommend this book to all lovers of art, not just of mosaic.

JOSEPH GROOCOCK was a Lecturer at Trinity College Dublin and at the Dublin Institute of Technology. An accomplished pianist and organist, conductor, and composer, Dr. Groocock died in 1997.

This book provides a comprehensive and accessible analysis whether, or the extent to which, NGOs can contribute as private actors to authoritative governance outcomes in the security realm, and thereby help mitigate armed violence by plugging governance gaps in this arena that state actors, or international governmental organizations (IGOs) either neglect, or can better address with NGO assistance. This book examines the current and future issues surrounding this objective in four sections: (i) a practitioner’s perspective of the potentials of conflict governance NGOs, (ii) global civil society and legitimation of conflict governance NGO activities, (iii) conflict governance NGOs as norm entrepreneurs and norm diffusion in global governance (iv) conflict governance NGOs in action.
