Craig Zacker is a writer editor, and networker whose computing experience began in the halcyon days of teletypes and paper tape. After making the move from minicomputers to PCs, he worked as an administrator of Novel NetWare networks and as a PC support technician, while operating a freelance desktop publishing business. After earning a Masters degree in English and American literature from NYU, Craig worked extensively on the integration of Windows NT into existing NetWare internetworks, and was employed as a technical writer, content provider, and Webmaster for the online services group of a large software company. Since devoting himself to writing and editing full time, Craig has authored or contributed to many books on operating systems and networking topics, and has published articles with top industry publications including Windows NT Magazine, for which he is a contributing editor.

Not familiar with any alternative texts

I bought this set as it was the required text for a networking class I am taking at a community college. However the set up of the book and lab manual seems really good in that someone who is not enrolled in a class could read the text and do the labs at home in a simple and easy manner. I do not have the willpower to actually do that, but it seems like a great set for "teach yourself" learning and certification.

Buying Experience - The seller and shipping and delivery were great. I had no problems and my items arrived quickly and easily.

70-680 Text portion - (Read most of the chapters 1-6) The text is a little dry. You probably expect this, as it is a certification book, and a "text book" and a computer book, many of which lead to dry texts. However I found other "texts" to be less dry and easier reads. (Such as "Official Ubuntu Server Book" and the "Network+ Guide to Networks") The book includes many sections describing what a process looks like. For example there is a 7 page section on "Performing a Clean Install" which features 12 screenshots and perhaps a page of text. These walk-throughs are certainly helpful, but I feel that they would be more helpful in an appendix, a companion text, online or in the lab manual, when you are actually doing these steps. Because of these walkthroughs, for me, there is no continuity or flow to the chapters, which makes reading difficult.

70-680 Lab Manual portion - (Only gone through lab 5 so far.) So far I have used the lab manual more than the text. I have found it to be fairly thorough with only a couple errors/omissions so far. Before taking this class and buying this book I was already pretty familiar with windows 7 (as well as xp, and comfortable if not knowledgable in the command line.) So I have had no hiccups. There are a few times so far where we are navigating the command line, and my classmates have had trouble. There is not (that I have seen or looked for) a "command line primer" or anything like that. Also some of my classmates are not native Windows users, so things like navigating the explorer, network shares, creating folders and such are foreign to them. So it is not a "everything you need to know to do anything in windows" book. But it is pretty good. It could be more complete, but I understand that the pressure is on to release these texts in a hurry to get the info out there to start testing it.

Error - Lab 4.4 step 6 - syntax is wrong, but in response it spits out correct syntax usage, which is nearly identical to the command you just tried to run. (There is a "/d:" in the book that should just be "d:")

Omission - Lab 5.4, Virtual PC only issue - You need to alter the validation settings for your task sequence. When trying to deploy an image (Lab 5.6 step 4) to my virtualized windows 7 box, the CPU was listed at only 3 or 4 mhz, and this falied the validation check. What our class did was alter Validation settings in the "Validation" group and the "Pre-Install -> New Computer Only -> Validate" sections to set validation CPU mhz to "13". I can't tell you why, or that it is strictly necessary, but for sure our whole class had to alter that setting to get lab 5.6 to complete. (One of our guys googled the issue and found someone who used the value "13" from trial and error I believe)

Offers good "hands-on" experience

What I like about this book is it is very straightforward and walks you through step-by-step how to do things. This is especially important if you plan to support Windows 7 in a business environment. The Microsoft online Virtual Labs (of which an access code comes with the book) are fantastic. You feel like you are actually working on a Windows 7 computer. This is especially important since I don't have access to Windows 7 at home to practice the labs. Because it's a "virtual" windows 7, you also don't have to worry about screwing up your lab computer. If something goes wrong, just restart the lab and try again.

I did have problems getting my labs to start in the beginning but Microsoft's helpdesk were quite helpful and able to fix the problems. They can also remotely connect to your computer (with permission) to fix the problem as well.

In conclusion, this is an excellent book to study for your Certification Exam in 70-680 Windows 7 Configuration. I look forward to passing the test.

These MOAC books are designed to give you the nuts and bolts and much more, and provide a step-by-step process on how to complete tasks and therefore are very worthwhile for newcomers. These books are not exam certification study guides designed to merely pass an exam and get certified but not possess real skills. These are excellent books in compilation with study guides which are directed mainly for exams.

Captivating!

In My Dreams It Was Simpler is unique, captivating and interesting. It truthfully and adequately represents the life of Nigerian young adults living in the UK. I could not put it down till I was done. The fact that a different author wrote for each character made it even more true to life. The language was appropriate. It wasn't over the top and the story-line was excellent. It highlighted the positives and nagatives of having a group of friends. It had life lessons and elements of the real struggles of being a young Christian adult in the world today without being too boring, churchy or even over-bearing. There was no church scene at all but it was speckled with reminders of Christian principles. Since I see it's season 1, I am hoping to see it on TV at some point. It really does read like a screenplay. A lovely read. Highly Recommended. I cannot wait for season 2 and for now, I am glued to the blog for snipets. Good job to the creator and her team of writers that put this together and for once again representing Nigeria in a good light.

I was very impressed at the quality of this book and how it was written. The characters were so interesting and felt so real to me. It was so hard to stop reading the book even after a long day of work. I am eagerly looking forward to the next book. This book is definitely a great purchase.

Spackfacious!

Whoo-whee, this is one humdinger of a book. Twelve-year-old Cecelia "Cissy" Sissney survives her days in Class Three under the strict tutelage of Miss May March by awaiting letters from her former teacher who ran away with a traveling theatre company (the Bright Lights Theatre Company) which has played in places like "Toosson" and "Nuorleens". So when diphtheria closes the school and a runaway grain silo flattens her parents' grocery store, it is only natural that Cissy wants to run away to join Miss Loucien and her new husband, Everett Crew. And somehow, in the company of the redoubtable Miss March, Cissy, her friend Habbakuk "Kookie" Warboys, their classmate Tibbie Boden and the unfortunate inventor Chad Powers (whose plan for moving the grain silo was blamed for the tragedy), end up doing just that. These are among the first signs that perhaps we ought to take this book with a grain of salt. Or perhaps the whole darn tub.

The Bright Lights Theatre Company, on the verge of destitution as usual, has found themselves holed up on a foundered steamship moored in the middle of a prairie while waiting for one of their number to get out of jail for profanity for quoting Shakespeare in the town of Salvation, Missouri. Miss March takes care of the jail and the six of them join the Crews (and discover that Loucien is hugely pregnant) and the other actors aboard what they believe to be the "Calliope". As the seasonal floods rise, the "Calliope" is once again swept onto the river, a giant tree stump still plugging the hole it impaled in the boat's hull. An "alligator man" (Elijah) who happened to be living in the boiler room and who seems to have an odd, but unremembered affinity for the boat, finds that he's able to steer the thing by sitting on the roof of the pilot house and using his feet.

This entirely impossible cast of characters then decide to start a traveling show on the boat itself, so they moor up in a likely place, put up handbills, and advertise for acts. They end up with a dog woman with an unintelligible Boston accent, a barber-surgeon who's skilled in phrenology, a hell-fire preacher, Medora and her Photopia, Max whose English is limited to Polish who performs with a flexible plank, and a black quartet. Later they take on-board Chip, the rather dim carpenter to help with repairs.

It seems the "Calliope" is always running into a spot of trouble. For instance, there's the gambler who holds the marker for the boat (from whom they learn her real name: the Sunshine Queen). There was that unfortunate misunderstanding about which boat was to be stripped for usable lumber and the sheriff who owned the other boat. The encounter with the pirate "Sugar Cain". And the time Kookie ended up in the water with the gator during a show and everyone thought it was an excellent act.

I read much of this book on my commute to and from work, so the entire ridership of the southwest branch of the Chicago CTA Blue Line thinks I'm plum outen my mind (not that that's an entirely incorrect assessment). This book is laugh out loud funny.

It does, eventually, as I feared, take a more serious turn, but there's still a sense that we shouldn't get too mournful. Poor Kookie, drunk (literally and figuratively) from the incident with the pirate, takes to a saloon and loses a chunk of money to a card sharp - the "Black Hand" Cole Blacker. He ends up so far in the hole that Cole comes to claim the Sunshine Queen in payment. Over the violent objections from his wife, Everett agrees to what appears to be a hopeless boat race to reclaim the Sunshine Queen. We sense that this isn't going to work out so well for the Bright Lights, but this here's where I stop giving away the plot, except to say that every element in the story has its purpose, and they all fall neatly into place.

Throughout the story, the tone is pitch-perfect. Ms. McCaughrean has a way with words that just draws the reader in, whether to the humor of the early story, the drama and excitement later on, or the sweet sentimental parts along the way. The characters are, of course, caricatures and parodies, but they nevertheless are real human beings and you can't help but love them all (well, with the exceptions of the ones you're not supposed to like). They are larger than life and in many ways more human than any real human can be.

Ms. McCaughrean does not merely expect us to suspend our disbelief. The Golden Gate Bridge is not strong enough to suspend that much disbelief. Rather, she expects us to pretend we have never heard the word "disbelief" and that we are utterly unfamiliar with its meaning. So don't bother asking yourself how a waterlogged, derelict boat with a tree-stump plugged hole piloted by a half-crazy old man can stay afloat. Don't ask yourself how such a motley crew could survive weeks at a time with nothing but the clothes on their backs or how decent people could allow young children to get mixed up in such unseemly goings-on. You'll only give yourself indigestion. Just find yourself a good spot with a view and enjoy the show.

This is probably one of the best books I have read. Ever. Not to sound trite, but I laughed and cried, and laughed until I cried. I don't care what types of books you like or don't like, if you're between the ages of 10 and 110, do yourself a favor and read this book. Unfortunately, Amazon only allows me five stars. But I give it ten stars anyway.

Truly a Glorious Adventure!

Geraldine McCaughrean possesses rare and exceptional talent. Like that of a master chef, her skillfully blended words create gourmet sentences that must be savored with each delectable bite. Visual pictures seem to fly off the pages of this book as the reader is swept into a fantastic journey of the imagination. The Glorious
Adventures of the Sunshine Queen is a fabulous book and will not disappoint kids who have a firm grasp on reading skills.

On occasion the story-line may be a bit challenging to follow, but the effort is entirely worthwhile and the reward great. Witty, poignant, and downright spackfacious, this book will most certainly enthrall young readers.

Highly Entertaining and Funny Adventure Story

Geraldine McCaughrean has shown tremendous range in her writing as well as the ability to turn research into entertaining and gripping stories. The Glorious Adventures of the Sunshine Queen is no different. Cissy, Kookie, and Tibbie must leave their little town in Oklahoma when Diptheria hits. Along with their often stern school teacher Miss May March, they set out on the train to find their former teacher, Loucien Shades Crew and her husband Everett who, along with a host of other interesting characters, live aboard a showboat and are The Bright Lights Theater Company. The Sunshine Queen, temporarily run ashore, finds its way back into the waters of the Numchuck River in Missouri and then the adventure really starts. The Bright Lights Theater Company picks up a crazy cast of performers and set off to try and make their own fortune on the river. Along the way they have to deal with a pirate, some angry townsfolk, and a particularly nasty swindler who tries to take the Sunshine Queen from them.

At first the cast of characters is a bit hard to keep track of since they have names like Cissy and Kookie and Boisenberry (which is where the handy cast of characters page comes in), but once the story is in motion, keeping track of the characters becomes easier. Each one has a distinct set of circumstances and their own personality. Thankfully, each personality is so individual and unique that you quickly forgive the sheer wackiness that abounds in the book. The book is laugh out loud funny at times as Cissy and Kookie often find themselves in situations they shouldn't and Everett has to talk his way out of problem after problem. The final situation near the end of the book seems too good to be true for a group of roving actors and musicians and McCaughrean seems to write with relish as Cissy really comes into her own to solve the problem head on.

Like many books for younger readers, there are lessons to be learned. Kookie finds out first hand what greed can do to a person and those around him and only gets out of it thanks to a quick thinking Everett and company. Cissy learns to find the strength to deal with her own problems and stand up for herself in hilarious fashion at times and even the often faint Tibbie gets some happiness in learning something new. Of course, there are other lessons to be learned as well, but I wouldn't want to go into too much detail and ruin the fun of discovery.

The Glorious Adventures of the Sunshine Queen is a heck of an entertaining read from start to finish. You know you're in for it when the book begins with an awfully spelled letter from a former teacher, but that's what makes the book so fun - the unpredictability of it all. A very enjoyable book from a very talented author; I highly recommend it.

About the Author

Lisa R. Jackson-Cherry, Ph.D., LCPC, NCC, is the department chair and a professor in the Department of Counseling at Marymount University and director of the clinical mental health counseling and pastoral counseling programs with primary teaching responsibilities in clinical supervision, crisis intervention, and pastoral integration. Her research and clinical practice areas include crisis intervention and planning, risk assessment, and treating complicated grief and addressing mental health issues of the military and children of fallen law enforcement officers. She is also a member of the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists.

Bradley T Erford, Ph.D., LCPC, NCC, is a professor in the school counseling program at Loyola University with primary teaching responsibilities in assessment, research, and lifespan development. He has held numerous professional leadership positions and published numerous books, articles and book chapters.

A Practical Tool

As a counseling grad student I find this book extremely helpful and practical. Many of our books are theoretical in nature but this seems to be something which, if implemented, will give me some useful and practical real-life tools to address crisis situations. I plan to go back through it when class is done and outline a plan of action in preparation for each type of crisis that may well present in session. It lists the types of people that a counselor will need as resources and referrals in the community and I can make those connections while I am learning the material rather than being caught entirely by surprise in the moment once I'm up and running. The advice seems well balanced and considers several ways of dealing with the same difficulties.

The total package for crisis counseling competency!

This text is relevant, comprehensive and hailed as such by my graduate students. Engaging them in critical thinking and synthesis of assessment, intervention and prevention topics is evocative yet necessary to prepare them for a crisis event. I found the Jackson-Cherry text particularly useful in initiating that process.

Content Wondeful! Kindle version buggy.

The content of the book is extremely helpful. It's concise, well organized, well written, and full of all the right information needed for my introduction to crisis intervention now and saving it as a great reference book for later.

Having said that, I wish I had ordered the physical book. The Kindle version is buggy. It crashes frequently and has to be reopened from the very beginning of the text. This makes flipping through the text and looking for information on the fly very difficult and frustrating.

I'm running Kindle for Desktop in Windows 7 on an Intel i3 laptop. I've never had this problem before now. Additionally, for some odd reason Kindle for Desktop is the only place I can open the text. Not on my phone, not on the web, and not on my older Kindle keyboard. It's odd and not an issue the authors should have to fix.

Currently SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the State University of New York, New Paltz, he is the author, contributing author, or editor of twenty books, including the award-winning Chinese Houses: The Architectural Heritage of a Nation and Chinese Houses of Southeast Asia: The Eclectic Architecture of Sojourners and Settlers.

Peranakan Chinese Home and Art

It is a world of it's own and yet it is the world of millions of South East Asian Chinese immigrants who were in search of a better world, assimilated into the culture and then created a world of culture all their own, but always relating to the country of birth. Some of the houses may be a bit too much and extravagant, but that is true of most " New " wealth. The taste is sometime a little to ornate for my taste but it does not mean I cannot appreciate the beauty of it.

Book in fairly good condition and prompt delivery. This is a good intro book for anyone interested in this particular sub-culture in the south east asia. For me I sort of grew up in this culture and am looking to reinforce my concept and apply to my art design. As an intro book the subject matter might not have gone deep enough for me.

It's small but has great content.

I would give it 5 stars if it wasn't so small. A lot of details and texture get lost unless you look really close. The actual art is great and it's cool to see how different characters and enemies could have looked.
