Exploring the relationship between the United States and the Malayan/Malaysian economy, the book concentrates on the period 1870 to 1957, with particular focus on trade flows and foreign direct investment. It surveys the reasons behind the levels of US trade and investment, and considers the impact of the presence of both British governments and businesses on the US-Malayan relationship.

The book goes on to examine the impact of US trade and investment on Malaya, with detailed analysis of the cases of three important US inward investors: Yukon Gold Company, United States Rubber Company, and Ford Motor Company. The author argues that the British colonial presence provided an infrastructure that facilitated US trade and FDI flows with Malaya, although on occasion restrictive policies followed by the colonial government diverted US FDI flows elsewhere. However, US FDI and trade remained constrained by Malaya’s status as a low income developing country with little potential for market-oriented manufacturing investment. Nonetheless, it demonstrates that US trade and FDI had a positive impact on the Malayan economy through flows of organisational and technological capabilities. An epilogue brings the story up to date for contemporary US-Malaysian economic relations.

Overall, this book is an insightful and highly original account of the part played by US trade and investment in Malaya’s economic development.

Originally, I read the first printing of this book...since then, there has been more uncovered to the point where I could not put the book down. As with the first book, it leaves the reader trying to figure out how things are tied together. I remember growing up in Queens around the time that these murders were taking place. My father and I were following the case in the newspapers and would have discussions on what fit and what didn't fit--I'm sure my dad would love to read this book.

And excellent book that ties together these two cases

I have read a lot of true crime over many years, especially concerning the Manson case and the Son of sam case. This book really takes you into the world of cults and brings to light many things about the Son of Sam case that I was quite unaware of, tying in seemingly unrelated events and people that may have otherwise gone unnoticed. And excellent book that ties together these two cases. I strongly recommend.

Meddling Kids...

The gang in the Mystery Machine go on a trip to visit Daphne's uncle, the police chief of Castle Rock. When they get there they learn of a jewel thief who has recently stolen a lot of jewels. So of course they decide to investigate. Wanting to start fresh in the morning they head to the only place in town to spend the night, the Castle Hotel. A creepy looking old castle up on a cliff overlooking the town. I won't spoil the story, but I will say they don't get much sleep that night.

I bought the three ebooks in this set to have in my Kindle library for someone under twelve to read. And since I have them I decided to read them first myself. Back in the day when Scooby-Doo first came on television it was one of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons. Mainly I think because it was a mystery series. So I figure I would check these stories out to see if they were as good as the television episodes. I have to say this first mystery is great. I could easy imagine it as a script for one of the TV shows. The pacing was fast, and the action matched that of pretty much every Scooby-Doo episode I've ever seen. I'd recommend this book to a young person interested in a good mystery.

The ebook is 61 pages long - with real page numbers. There are nine chapters. At the beginning of each chapter there is an illustration, and a few more scattered through-out the book. I read the book on my Kindle Keyboard so the images looked B/W to me. I later check them on my HP TouchPad and they are indeed B/W images, the cover art work is color.

At the end of the book you get a ZoinksPoints code number, redeemable at the ZoinksPoints website.

Scooby-Doo Meets a Vampire

Scooby and the Mystery Inc. gang travel to Castle Rock to visit Daphne's uncle, police chief Brad Bestler. But when they arrive, they find themselves in the middle of another mystery! Local jewel thefts have been attributed to a mysterious cloaked figure with eerily white skin, spawning rumors of vampires. The gang stays in the Castle Hotel, run by Dr. Franklin and his assistant, Ivan, both of whom behave strangely. Soon the teens and Scooby-Doo experience frightening antics and end up trying to solve the mystery of not only the jewel thefts but also the happenings at the hotel. Are they linked, and is the explanation rational or supernatural?

This short children's chapter book evokes the spirit of the original "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?" television show. The story is sufficiently spooky for young readers but not terrifying, and the characters remain true to their original televised counterparts, down to Shaggy's overuse of the interjection "like" and Scooby's distinctive speech ("Ruh-roh!"), which makes this series enjoyable and easy to follow. Also, the romantic aspect that has been recently introduced into modern remakes of the series is refreshingly lacking here. There are many black-and-white illustrations that enhance the reader's imagination, and the chapters are short. Some readers may need help with certain words or phrases, but overall this is a delightful book for Scooby fans and for mystery lovers.

Can't wait for more of these books

I got this to read to my three and five year old kids before bed. They LOVE Scooby doo and this is so much better then the little books we usually read to them. One chapter a night and it leaves them hanging for more. I really can't wait for more of these to come out. Its great for boys and girls... and us as parents too.
