He has published articles in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, banking, swaps, repurchase agreements, and market risks. His consulting practice specializes in investment management and securities business, and he speaks on the subjects of investment banking and capital markets at corporate programs. Professor Liaw earned his doctoral degree from Northwestern University.

Good introduction, but no details

This is an excellent book for anyone wondering what Investment Banking is all about, but who doesn't want to learn how to price a company. It describes in sufficient detail, for the reader to understand, the concepts underlying Investment Banking and what they really do in the Investment Banking world as well as explaining in easy (relatively) terms the jargon that is used in the business.
If you want the theoretical underpinnings of the financial world, this book is not for you. If, on the other hand, you're an aspiring Investment Banker that wants to know what it is all abour or if you're just curious about what the Investment Banking business is about: buy this book as a primer/introduction and if you find it interesting, search for a more theoretical book.

Disappointing and Inaccurate

My biggest problem with this book is that it contains much misleading information on investment banking -- particularly with respect to securities law. As a former corporate and securities attorney and now investment banker, I found that at many points Liaw was at best half right and at worst completely wrong with respect to some of the finer points of the financing process. The book also contains numerous grammatical mistakes that are extremely distracting. (I would have expected more from John Wiley & Sons. Next time please hire a proofreader!) Is that too much to ask for an $80 book? In fairness, I did not get past the first 3 chapters of the book so perhaps the book gets much better later on, but I sincerely doubt it. In short, this book is not worth the money.

I was disappointed that I could not get any discount, but I bought it anyway. I wanted to get an understanding of this particular business segment. After reading several chapters of the book, I have to say that I am glad I purchased this title. It's an excellent reading for business school students and for those interested in this business. The book does not cover everything under the sun, but it does cover many of the major business areas very well. Nice and easy reading, no nonsense mathmatical equations. A good book.

Dare you to put this one down!

I've never understood the public's infatuation with such insipid creatures as Kim Kardashian, Lindsey Lohan or any reality show "personality", when there are plenty of genuinely interesting people to read about. Many of these people are showcased in Christopher Zara's book "Tortured Artists". Did you know that Joey Ramone was born with a phantom twin attached to his spine? I can't say that I did. As an art historian, I felt that I already knew quite a bit about artists and other historical figures, but this book kept me hooked with new nuggets of fascinating information. Also it's one thing to relay these facts; its altogether different to synthesize those facts into an insightful story on that individual and demonstrate how these things affected them and their work. But this isn't dry psychobabble. This is very entertaining reading. Zara's writing style is witty and very relatable, with popular cultural references that are sure to amuse. I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's one of the most enjoyable books I've read in a long time.

As they go on about a particular influence or major figure in a particular field of music, literature, or art, I find myself grasping for something cool to say about "so-and-so". But really I don't have much to add, regretably, unless "so-and-so's" life was featured late-night on a made for tv movie on Lifetime (just as an aside, to show that I'm not a complete failure, my arcane knowledge specialty is in politics and geo-politics, so watch out when we steer the conversation towards the 1988 Presidential campaign!).

Then along came this great book! It's really one of those books that when you pick it up and start leafing through it you find yourself wanting to read more and more. I'd say that they were like intellectual potato chips, once you read one chapter you're ready to read the next one, and the next. But they're more like intellectual Doritos, because they're a bit spicy and have a great stylistic zing to them that make it seem like you are already friends with the author. Just another fun art-sy creative type sitting around a bottle of wine - only now I have something interesting to say, because I've read this book.

So, if you are interested in pop culture, history, art, literature, or music - you're going to really enjoy this book. If you don't like those topics, well, god help you. You must be an insufferable bore and I pity your co-workers.

Interesting and thought-provoking essays on great artists

I really enjoyed this book a lot. It's a series of short essays about acclaimed artists broken into chapters that categorize their particular angst - bad childhood, unrequited love, drug abuse. It's especially handy to have around if you're interrupted a lot when you're reading as each little story about the artists isn't very long and it's easy to put down and pick back up again.

What this book really did was get me thinking about the link between pain and great art. Would any of these artists trade their "greatness" in order to have a happy life? Was creating art that transcends the ages worth being tormented and miserable during their lives? Would I be willing to experience deep pain across my life in order to produce a work of art on par with the artists listed in the book? I don't have an answer for any of these questions, but they certainly made me pause and reflect.

Also, the illustrations in the book are very fun and really added to the work.

A good read

The author presents an interest concept of his own family "discovering" America. The story gets a bit thin as he does not go into depth with the most important proofs, while he spends much more time creating a history of the Grail and the Templars. For the real story of Antonio and Nicolo Zeno story and the 1398 expedition there are better books to read. Sinclair somehow decided the Doge of Venice and the family Zeno should not have an "O" after their name. Once making this error - he sticks to it despite the fact that no one else has ever spelled it as ZEN. Leading this reader to wonder if a fact checker might have helped.

The Truth About America's Origins

It's no big surprise that what we learn in public schools & history books is full of lies, deceipt and falsehood. This is a great book that will Illuminate the authentic origins of the U.S.A and the real Spiritual Doctrines upon which christianity has tried for the last 1000 years or more, to hide from us. So, if you want the Real Deal, I highly recommend this reading for any serious seeker of hidden truth kept from the general population for too long.

Another load of hooey

Uncritical, inaccurate, unreferenced and incredible - and that, believe me, is a flattering review compared with what I might have said. A combination of fantastic ignorance - of language, of literature and of history - combined with deliberate distortion makes for an acute attack of mental indigestion.

Buy it, read it, have a good laugh, donate it to Oxfam. That way it will at least do somebody some good, even if you end up in the funny farm, probably in the padded cell next door to the author's.

I really like this book!!

I really like this book!! My first impression from reading the book is like as if I wrote the book myself. This book talks about what I believe in, what I know, and the words and style of this book are very close to me, however, the globality, structure, and openness of the mind and deep understanding of ideas is all part of the author's thinking and style. I am unable to find such words that could so beautifully and truthfully describe the love contained in this book.

The authors ideas, so clearly portrayed in the form of a teacher - student dialogue, leave the reader susceptible to an entirely new forward thinking mind-set. Mind Floss offers a freedom of thought that accesses ideas and foresight into the fundamental aspects of human nature, its evolution and its future. I particularly enjoyed Dr Tagers approach to the reformation of education, the key differences between knowledge and wisdom, and the development of intuitive thought. This book is a must read for anyone with an inquisitive mind, searching for answers both scientific and philosophical, or just keen to take a less travelled path into the human psyche and its links with the physical world. In my humble opinion this piece of work will only gain importance, as the realisation of the ideas inside come to fruition. Read It!!!!!

Mind opening for all ages

I have been inspired by this book. As far as mind expansion goes, this book has some of the easiest and most accessible content for creating change. For people looking for transformation in their lives, this book should be helpful for understanding the bigger picture. Linking nicely between science, metaphysics and spirit. This book is a very clear manifestation of human mind, consciousness, wisdom, sex, action and creating positive thoughts. It reads as sweetly as siberian honey and gives the reader a feeling of what is our true nature and how to move closer toward it. Reading this book with an open mind is a gift to your creativity and I recommend it very highly!

The bottom line is that the book lays out the basics for men who are interested in improving the shape of their body. Most of the book is dedicated to showing and telling you what each exercise is and how to do it properly. If you are already in shape, have a good program that you are happy with then you don't need this book. For me, it has been great. The explanation of techniques and basic nutritional advice are just what I needed. If you are looking for a place to get started this book is definitely a good place to start

Very comprehensive; a good value for your money

The book is divided into 4 parts followed by appendices. Part 1 is background/foundational knowledge: myths, common mistakes, focus/concentration during exercise, etc. About 30 pages altogether. Part 2 explains the components of a successful fitness program; Training, nutrition, rest and recovery. About 52 pages or so. Part 3 explains the exercises. There are individual chapters for legs, back, chest, shoulders, triceps, biceps, and abs. About 140 pages. Part 4 explains the routines. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced routines. About 20 pages. There is an appendix for each of the following: glossary, table of food values, sample diets, exercise chart, nutrition log, tracking your progress, grocery shopping list, body hair free, body-sculpting under special circumstances, anatomy charts, and exercise descriptions.
The book is very thorough. The authors spent the time to make it as complete as possible. The exercises are very well described, and there are photos as well. My only beef was w/ the description of the nutrition program that they recommend. At one point it sounds like they're recommending a diet based on individual protein needs. But the ready-made diets they provide seemed to be based on calories. I felt that it was a little vague; so I e-mailed them and they answered my questions to my satisfaction (they're very busy and it did take nearly 2 weeks though, so don't be in a hurry!). Here is an excerpt from their reply e-mail: "The reason for the discrepancy is the following:
While the best way to determine needs is by
calculating your individual protein requirements (a la
zone style) and then going from there, fact is that
most people get overwhelmed by such calculations..." And later in the e-mail,"SO what we did for those people that are intimidated by numbers is that we broke the diet down by calories
instead of protein requirements. While the protein in
the calorie broken down diets may be a bit higher than
what some individuals need, since the amount is not
extremely excessive and total calories are not that
high, the body will not be storing that extra protein
as body fat. Worst case scenario it gets burned as
energy.
So for you we would recommend that you follow a diet
based on your individual protein requirements. Use 1
gram/lb for low calorie weeks and 1.5 grams per pound
for high calorie weeks. Also, adjust the carbs
accordingly.
As far as the Zone Diet, like you said it does make
sense. The only thing that we do not agree with Dr.
Sears is the strictness that he prescribes in adhering
to very precise gram amounts and the fact that he does
not like starchy carbs. Other than that, he is pretty
much right on the money. Balance, not the banning of
one macronutrient in favor of others is the key for
long term success."
The book is well-written, comprehensive, and the authors seem conscientious, and willing to answer additional questions. I recommend this book without reservation.

Buy This Book! (but fire the editor)

I am 56 years old and began lifting weights for the first time in my life at age 54. That was 19 months ago. I bought this book about 18 months ago and it has truly been the "Bible" for me ever since.

The substance of the book is excellent. It has detailed exercise instructions and photos (primarily dumbbells oriented, some barbells) and the recommended workout routines are great. The nuitrition advice and diet suggestions are also very helpful. I've lost 50 pounds of fat and increased my strength over 200%.

I've bought 2 other workout books since getting the "Bible" and I always find myself returning to the Body Sculpting Bible for guidance in my workouts.

Why not 5 stars? Because the editing stinks. The typos and layout mistakes are obvious, distracting and give an amateurish, self-published appearance to the book. Luckily the reader can usually figure out what was intended from the context, although in one workout an exercise is just plain wrong.

I know so because the author maintains a web site and is very good about responding to reader questions and correcting the editorial oversights. The publiser should really consider posting .pdf errata sheet.

Despite the poor editing, I recommend this book and its advice.
