The Beatles and their Revolutionary Bass Player, by Dennis Alstrand

How the hell did four guys, from a city on the Northwest Coast of England, come to rule the world? I can not imagine what life would have been like without them. Can you?

How would the current economic state or all of the sorrows of the world compare to going through life never hearing “She Loves You” or “A Day in the Life”? Instead, we were able to live vicariously through a story that would make a great novel (if someone ever chose to write it as such). It has everything you need: desire, early failures, bleak moments, heartbreak, love affairs, dragon women and helpless maidens, martyrs, incredible characters—some dark and some light— coming and going just when they were most needed, insecurity and loyalty, triumph against all odds, the world held in the sway of four men who changed it all, a breakup that was viewed with more despair than Charles and Diana and—finally—four figures, four separate Phoenixes, stumbling to their feet and learning for the first time how to stand up without their three mates at their side. The intention of this book is to capture some of that story with a focus on the evolution of the bass playing of Paul McCartney. The book’s genesis was a website devoted to his bass guitar work (still online at www.alstrand.com) but it became clear that any discussion of one aspect of the Beatles leaves the rest of the story wanting. For example, to talk only about McCartney’s most famous bass line—the one in “Come Together”—ignores the innovative drumming of Ringo Starr, the swampiness of Paul’s electric piano, the quality of John Lennon’s voice, and the mere fact that he is saying “shoot me” at the start of each instrumental riff. To talk about one thing, you have to talk about it all.

Writing this book, I soon realized, was like riding on an emotional roller coaster. Pull out an old Beatles’ chestnut and listen closely to it with the intention of explaining it to someone else and you’ll see what I mean. In my case, maybe something about the structure of the arrangement would strike me as brilliant and I’d grapple for words to describe it. Words that did not make me sound like a wide-eyed, throat-gurgling, gob-smacked fanatic. Which I am, but I do try to hide it in these pages.

The songs that I had the most fun with were “She Loves You,” “A Day in the Life,” “Hey Jude,” “Come Together” and “I Want You (She’s So Heavy).” Each song presents itself as a well-orchestrated masterpiece, complete in every way. To me, the Beatles were such an incredible team—such a tight unit—that whatever an individual did had an impact on the larger unit. In the early days, the group would generally run their songs through what I call the Beatles Machine. A song would go in with chords and melody and come out a full-fledged Beatles song.

About the Author
Dennis Alstrand started playing a Kent bass his mother bought for him in 1969. It was an intense but easy experience to become adept at the instrument, especially with heroes such as Paul McCartney, Jack Bruce and Chris Squire as role models. He still plays to this day (along with guitar and piano) and lives with his wife Sandi in the Puna district of the Big Island of Hawaii. As can be surmised by the frequent inclusions in this book, he loves to converse with fellow Beatles’ fans and can be contacted at dennis@alstrand.com

Beatles Explained for Everyone
By Eugene Belmont
Just got this book a few days ago and have been reading, reading, reading. Dennis explains in the first few pages what to expect as you read on, and it's all true. He promises not to overwhelm with music theory, and he doesn't (thank goodness, my musical training ended with "my dog has fleas"). And to those folks who just simply love the Beatles and don't know why, this book will help you to understand the "why." The Beatle anecdotes are wonderful and skillfully narrated. And, although the book provides great coverage of Paul McCartney and his evolution as a bass player, the other members of the Fab Four are given their due, as well. It's very obvious right from the first page that Dennis is deeply steeped in Beatle lore, and is a loyal and devoted fan; he doesn't mind giving a little back o' the hand to those that presented problems to the Beatles' progress to stardom on the world stage. All in all, "The Beatles and their Revolutionary Bass Player" is a great read. Great job, Dennis!

Amazing.
By Nancy Bienville
Amazing reading the behind the scenes goings-on, things I didn't know before. Amazing that each song is written about so intelligently yet understandably. Amazing at how when I read about a song, or songs, I want to hear it again, to hear what Dennis hears. Amazing is the way the book is laid out so it can be read cover to cover, or skipped through at different years. Amazing how laugh-out-loud remarks are placed in unexpected places.
Also amazing is how Dennis took the soundtrack of my life and has brought new, interesting information to it.
Just go buy the book. Really. You will love it.

Preacher's Boy, by Katherine Paterson

It's 1899 in a small town in Vermont, and the turn of the century is coming fast. According to certain members of the church where Robbie's father is the preacher, the end of the century might even mean the end of the world. But Robbie has more pressing worries. He's sure his father loves his simple-minded brother, Elliot, better than him, and he can no longer endure the tiresome restrictions of Christianity. He decides to leave the fold and become an "apeist" and, just in case the church whisperers are right, resolves to live life to the fullest. His high-spirited and often hot-headed behavior does nothing to improve his father's opinion of him, nor does it improve the congregation's flagging opinion of his father. Not until the consequences of his actions hurt others does Robbie put a stop to the snowballing chain of events he has set off and begin to realize his father might love him despite his wayward tendencies.

Katherine Paterson is the recipient of the 2013 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award.

From Publishers Weekly
Paterson (Bridge to Terabithia; Jacob Have I Loved) captures the essence of an adolescent's fundamental questions of God and existence in this finely honed novel. As the year 1899 draws to a close, the people in Robbie's rural Vermont community anticipate the coming of the 20th century with a mixture of excitement and apprehension. Some fear that the end is near. Others, like Robbie's father, a minister with progressive ideas, thinks "the world's at a sort of beginning." Robbie does not know what to believe. Recently, he has begun to question God and the validity of the Ten Commandments. As the son of a preacher, he is expected to exhibit exemplary behavior, but he cannot seem to turn the other cheek to those who make fun of his "simple-minded" brother. In a fit of anger, Robbie comes dangerously close to drowning a boy and sets off a chain of irreversible events; he must rely on his conscience to lead him toward redemption. Once again placing universal conflict in a historical context, Paterson gives a compassionate, absorbing rendering of an adolescent boy trying to break free from social and religious constraints. Besides delving into the mind of the young rebel, she successfully evokes the climate of the times, showing how the townspeople respond to modern inventions, discoveries and ideas. The story contains a moral, but the author remains nearly invisible as she guides her characters through crises, then leaves them to fend for themselves at the dawn of a new era. Ages 10-14. (Aug.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-Paterson, so adept at capturing a sense of time and place, returns once again to mine the richness of small-town Vermont during the 19th century. Here, she reflects on the approach of the previous century as she follows the adventures of energetic, mischievous Robbie Hewitt, a preacher's son with a bit of a temper, from Decoration Day in May, 1899, to the eve of January 1, 1900. New ideas are circulating. Darwin's theory of evolution gets confused in Robbie's mind with atheism. When he decides that it is too hard to behave, that God is too hard to please, and that the world may end soon anyway, he declares himself an "apeist." Following a fight with his nemesis, he becomes involved with Violet, a poor homeless girl, and her alcoholic father, Zeb. While planning his own kidnapping for profit, he implicates Zeb, who is likely to hang for the crime. Robbie's own personal miracle from God, a ride in a motorcar, reaffirms him as a true believer. As in Jip (Dutton, 1996), Paterson tells a multilayered coming-of-age story of loyalty, courage, and the enduring values of family. With warmth, humor, and her powerful yet plain style, Paterson draws empathetic and memorable characters. Readers share the anticipation and the joy of Robbie and his father as they welcome the 20th century at the book's end.

From Booklist
Paterson is arguably the premier author among children's book writers today, and Preacher's Boy is another in a long list of titles (but not so long as to dilute her talent) that shows why. In this story, she takes a serious philosophical topic--what God wants from us and what we want from God--and shapes its profundity with irony and wit. It is the turn of the twentieth century, and Robbie, son of a preacher, is tired of trying to please God. Moreover, although Robbie's father is kind and gentle, it's not that easy to do what he wants, either. So when a fire-and-brimstone minister suggests that the world may be ending soon, Robbie decides that whatever time is left will be more fun without God in the equation. Like Huckleberry Finn (of whom there are many overtones), Robbie is willing to take his chances with eternity for the opportunity to do what he wants. But before long, Robbie has put his mentally disabled brother in danger, almost choked another boy to death in a fury, and masterminded a harebrained kidnapping hoax that might result in a man's execution. At every turn, Paterson splendidly balances Robbie's moral choices with pure entertainment, especially as it twists the plot. And though there are a couple of stereotypical characters, including a dirty vagabond girl and her drunkard father, even they are elevated because Paterson writes about them with humor and compassion. As the public demands more books with moral issues at their core, here's one that envelops readers with its principled reflections, instead of pounding them over their heads. Ilene Cooper

One of the Great Authors
By Timothy Haugh
A book by Katherine Paterson is always difficult to judge. The main reason is because she has written a truly great book--"Bridge to Terabithia"--and a number of others that are nearly as great. Because of this, there is a tendency to be a tougher judge of her books as if every new novel should be a masterpiece. Fortunately, Ms. Paterson lives up to the challenge time after time.
I am constantly amazed at how well Ms. Paterson is able to write in the voice of young person, creating very realistic characters. Though a bit older myself these days, I can identify very well with Robbie as he stuggles with the difficulties in his life. I am particularly impressed with the depiction of Robbie's relationship with his father and how he struggles to understand him. Also, the difficulties he has in being himself while at the same time trying to be the son of a good man who has an important and public job in his hometown.
Though I don't think any good book is really gender-specific to an active reader, I can see where young boys would find this book speaking to them a little more. Still, I would encourage anyone with a love of good literature to read this book. It is a stong depiction of an interesting character.

Easy Read

It is an easy, fun read but there is also a deeper meaning. It is a mixture of Huck Finn, and the prodigal son. I enjoyed.

Preacher's Boy by Katherine Paterson
By A Customer
I picked out this book to read because of the author. I had read 'Bridge to Terabithia' two years before for school and I loved it, so I figured that anything else written by Katherine Paterson would be just as good. I was right. I started the book because of the author, and I finished it because of the story.

Preacher's Boy is about a young boy in 1899 who thinks that the world will end with the year. His father is the town preacher, but Robbie, the boy, thinks that the ten commandments are too confining. He thinks that since he can't do wat he wants while he is a Christian, he will become an atheist. Unfortunantly, he doesn't know what they are areally called, so he spends the entire book calling himself an apeist.

This book is filled with laughs and funny situations, many of which made me laugh out loud. I would definantly recommend this book to anyone that wants a good laugh. This book is probably best for ages 7-14, although I think that anyone would enjoy it.

Reading Seneca: Stoic Philosophy at Rome, by Brad Inwood

Brad Inwood presents a selection of his most influential essays on the philosophy of Seneca, the Roman Stoic thinker, statesman, and tragedian of the first century AD. Including two brand-new pieces, and a helpful introduction to orient the reader, this volume will be an essential guide for anyone seeking to understand Seneca's fertile, wide-ranging thought and its impact on subsequent generations.

In each of these essays Seneca is considered as a philosopher, but with as much account as possible taken of his life, his education, his intellectual and literary background, his career, and his self-presentation as an author. Seneca emerges as a discerning and well-read Stoic, with a strong inclination to think for himself in the context of an intellectual climate teeming with influences from other schools. Seneca's intellectual engagement with Platonism, Aristotelianism, and even with Epicureanism involved a wide range of substantial philosophical interests and concerns. His philosophy was indeed shaped by the fact that he was a Roman, but he was a true philosopher shaped by his culture rather than a Roman writer trying his hand at philosophical themes. The highly rhetorical character of his writing must be accounted for when reading his works, and when one does so the underlying philosophical themes stand out more clearly. While it is hard to generalize about an overall intellectual agenda or systematic philosophical method, key themes and strategies are evident. Inwood shows how Seneca's philosophical ingenium worked itself out in a fundamentally particularistic way as he pursued those aspects of Stoicism that engaged him most forcefully over his career.

A Short History of the Italian Renaissance, by Kenneth R. Bartlett

Award-winning lecturer Kenneth R. Bartlett applies his decades of experience teaching the Italian Renaissance to this beautifully illustrated overview. In his introductory Note to the Reader, Bartlett first explains why he chose Jacob Burckhardt's classic narrative to guide students through the complex history of the Renaissance and then provides his own contemporary interpretation of that narrative. Over seventy color illustrations, genealogies of important Renaissance families, eight maps, a list of popes, a timeline of events, a bibliography, and an index are included.

Review
The range of subjects treated in the book is impressive, and gives a broad audience an idea of the vastness of aspects of the Italian Renaissance. (European Review of History)

Review
A Short History of the Italian Renaissance is Jacob Burckhardt re-engineered for the twenty-first century. Written with verve in a fluent and accessible style and copiously illustrated with lavish color images that bring the pageantry of the era to life, Bartlett revitalizes the Burckhardian classic cultural understanding of the Renaissance while revising it in light of the best recent scholarship. A helpful timeline, tables, and suggested bibliographies make this book arguably the best paper and ink portal available for delving into this fascinating and consequential period. Burckhardt found in the Italian Renaissance a time of tumult and temerity productive of a new and more modern way of life. Teachers seeking to convey that transformative vitality to students can only be grateful to have this book available as their guide. (J.B. Shank, Director, Center for Early Modern History, University of Minnesota)

Kenneth R. Bartlett took a significant gamble in bringing together the challenging political and cultural events of the entire period. Yet, his book reads like an exciting story and his thirty years of experience as a scholar and teacher prepared him well to present his observations with confidence and clarity to an audience that will include students, scholars, and any reader interested in the Italian Renaissance. (Elena Parma, University of Genoa)

The fruit of a long career as a professor of the Italian Renaissance, Bartlett's overview considers the Renaissance as a cultural movement in the influential tradition of Jacob Burckhardt. Here, Bartlett explains in a nuanced but lucid manner the unique 'mentality of the age' and adopts effective strategies to hold his audience's attention. Substantial quotations from Renaissance texts in English translation enable students to witness the characteristics of the period. Attractive color illustrations allow readers to explore the importance of Renaissance art and architecture. The suggested readings will bring students closer to the archival research of recent scholars upon which Bartlett's skillful and compelling introduction is predicated. (Cathleen Hoeniger, Queen's University)

4.5 Excellent book but missing a few key elements
By LARA1407
I'd give this book a 4.5. It is an excellent read, extremely thorough, and I learned things I didn't know despite teaching Italian Renaissance many times. To the degree I have any problem with the book, it deals with lack of attention to two main facets of the Renaissance -- 1) art and 2) women, gender and sexuality issues. There is a chapter on art, but almost nothing on the huge field of artistic patronage and its importance as a facet of familial vanity/honor/competition and conspicuous consumption. Bartlett doesn't deal at all (except for a few sentences) with women, gender and sexuality, despite Joan Kelly's opening of that field long ago with her article "Was there a Renaissance for women?" Even though her answer was no, not for Italy, not then, it led to numerous works on female writers and artists of the Renaissance as well as lives of wives, widows, prostitutes and courtesans. Likewise, many books have dealt extensively with sexuality in the Renaissance. I have added these subjects separately to my syllabus with other readings.

I think this is an excellent book, but those are areas that need attention. Less attention could be paid to the minor states of the peninsula.

Great overview in an attention-holding narrative!
By KNA
Perhaps a scholar of Italian Renaissance may find this book too elementary, the remaining 99% of us will be entertained and informed. The author presents a history of this place and time with an eye to the interplay of various forces that together create a fascinating and thoughtful epic tale. The author manages to adroitly incorporate these disparate but essential threads into a tapestry that makes sense both along the way and most, most gratifying, in the end. When I closed the back cover, I felt gratifyingly familiar with the art, the politics, the economics and the culture of Renaissance Italy (and in relevant part contemporary Europe), not to mention the key figures and events made fascinatingly memorable in the author's telling.

Great book!
By HundaHanna
I decided to buy this book out of curiosity. I know the work of Turid Rugaas and her writings about calming signals so I wanted to see what Rosie Lowry had to offer. I was not disappointed. It really is worth reading, filled with questions (and answers) about why we behave and act around our dogs in the way that we do. I think all dog owners should read this book because it can help them become better dog owners, help them understanding their dogs and help them fill their dogs REAL needs - not the needs that we think they have!

This book will be on my students reading list.

Highly recommended
By Colin Carberry
I highly recommend Rosie Lowry's book, "Understanding the Silent Communication of Dogs" to anyone who loves dogs and is trying to become a better companion to the dog or dogs in their lives.

This book cuts through the popular jargon of dog training and behavior today, pointing the way to communicating simply and from the heart - from one species to another. It opens the door for us humans to enter into the inner emotions and lives of the dogs we live with, and creates the possibility of a deeper and richer relationship than we might have imagined. It shows us the way to offer our dogs love and compassion - guided by wisdom. Something they give to us so easily and in such abundance.

I wanted so badly...
By Kelli Chester
To give this book a better review. However, most of what the author wrote was common sense and I am very disappointed that I paid for what I already knew. I kept reading, in hopes for some enlightenment. Also, I dont agree with some of her thoughts about play, exercise, and giving choices....In the real world, dogs must learn to adapt to certain living styles, in order to be accepted into society.
