Good Survival Kit

Good book, well structure and straight to the point. Content flow is good on subject with good explanation of categories, topic definition, case scenarios, and applicable to real world experience. Author's reference material is well cited. This is a must have for high school and college student, beginning to high level managers, those seeking negotiation and counseling skills. If you have a need for a career building kit, this is it.

well organized book with excellent instructional resources

very well organized book on managing conflict. Has useful power points, quizzes, and instructional materials for classroom instruction. The case stories are simplistic. They do illustrate the points the authors wish to make. However, the students became bored with the same cast of characters that were carried throughout the book. Use of real cases and current events would improve instruction.

Colonel Giskes reveals the whole story.

As an amateur World War II historian, I am always searching for the books that tells it like it was and I am so impressed with this book that I read it twice. Colonel Giskes was truly a professional soldier and expert counter-espionage agent. His book will set the record straight for all time regardless of whose version you read regarding SOE-MID covert operations in Northern France and Holland during the war from March 1942 thru October 1943. He was a class officer who performed his task with true professionialism. He did every thing in his power to secure the lives of the Dutch agents that fell into his trap. However the SIPO (State Police) had the final word and the agents were executed. If you call yourself a historian of World War II, you must read this book from cover to cover. Thank You

Read this, and then read London's account

Too bad this isn't in Kindle format. I'm glad it came out.

For balance, you need to read the chronicle of the other side. Its title is: From Silk To Cyanide: A Coder's War, by Leo Marks (head of codes in SEO). A very readable account of London coders, written by the coder who first suspected Giskes, but couldn't get his group to acknowledge it had lost control of so much territory. He knew it was Giskes, but they didn't want him to prove it. Two competing secret services, you see, neither wanting to lose face or funding.

Giskes had help from good old British bureacracy at its finest (or otherwise).

An amazing story

I claim no expertise in this historical episode, but it is an amazing read and ranks amongst the more compelling stories of the use of intelligence in war. Giskes really did seem to be a different sort personally as well, supported by one of the epilog documents from a dutch spy and from the story of his boss, Admiral Canaris.

Knifty models confusingly presented

That rating is really 3 1/2 stars, because the book is better than just average. It may look slim, but it's chock-full of several models in each of many families of modules. Not hours, but weeks of fun (not to mention a lot of paper squares).
The problem is the presentation. Many models are hard to follow, especially when trying to put them together; more than once, I had to refer to another book to figure out what to do. Some diagrams are confusing, if not outright wrong (3-dimensional pictures are especially prone to this). Occasionally instructions are alluded to (e.g., in captions) that aren't there. There's a complete absence of cross-references between illustrative photos and instructions for folding them.
In short, a frustrating book. If the good parts weren't so good, it wouldn't be quite so frustrating.

Terrible...even for an experienced folder

I have been doing origami for about 10 years, and have had great success with modular origami (mostly from "Unit Origami" by Tomoko Fuse). This book has diagrams that are hard to understand, the colored side of the paper is not even marked so it's very difficult to know if you are folding correctly. There are no written instructions, only the bad diagrams and I could not make a single model from this book. Even the few photos of the completed models were in black and white and not very good photos at all. I would recommend Fuse's book or another modular origami book with better diagrams. For those that have had success with models from this book, congratulations, but even with my usual vast amount of patience it did not take long for me to throw this book across the room in frustration. However, I will say that the models are very unique and beatiful and if you can do them, they should be very satisfying. I am copying this same review for "3-d Geometric Origami" by Gurkewitz and Arnstein, for I felt the same was true of that book.

Beautiful Models for Expert Folders

This book bursts with stunning models of various polyhedra. The directions, and models, are harder than in "Modelar Origami Polyhedra." The book opens with a nicely detailed section of polyhedra facts, including the numbers of edges, corders, face shapes and category of each shape, along with a definition of Platonic solids. For the non-mathematician, this information provides a nice grounding in polyhedra. The directions for each module are complicated yet clear. Occasionally the lack of color in the book proves a bit frustrating, but patience and double-checking can bypass that nitpicky problem. The one thing this book does not provide is guidance about connecting all of the modules. That is when authorial reassurance is most required! Nevertheless, this book will provide hours of pleasure for those with patience and nimble fingers.

but instead it reads a bit like Bridget Jones' Diary without Darcy

I thought there would be stories about how he developed as a musician or the stories behind some of his songs, but instead it reads a bit like Bridget Jones' Diary without Darcy. The book is broken up by shows and recounts: how f***ed up he got before/after the show, how packed the club was, and whether he slept on a floor, couch or in a bed.

Each time he gets close to an interesting story - the death of a friend, his relationship with his father - he backs away with the statement that it is too personal. He's probably right, and I admire his decision to keep the personal private, but that leaves thin material for storytelling.

As a Frank Turner fan, I couldn't possibly pass this book up. I found it a fascinating read, and could hear Frank's voice while reading about his journeys and antics. I enjoyed hearing about the background of some of this songs, and it's fascinating to me what he (and I would imagine many other musicians) has gone through in order to make a living at something he loves.

Anyone interested in touring as a musician would find this an informative read, even if there's no interest in Frank himself.

About the Author
Ted Simpson is a long-time Course Technology author. He has been working, teaching, and writing about computers for over 20 years. In 1990, Simpson wrote one of the first books in the Course Technology Networking series, Hands-On Netware 3.11. Ted has used virtualization software to aid in teaching computer lab classes for several years, and has given presentations on virtualization for Course Technology conferences. Ted is currently a certified Novell and Microsoft instructor at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College, and the author of many books, including Hands-On Novell Open Enterprise Server, Guide to Novell Netware Administration Enhanced Edition, 70-270, 70-290: MCSE/MCSA Guide to Installing and Managing Microsoft XP Professional and Windows Server 2003, and Virtual Machines Companion, all of which are written for use with virtualization. In addition to classroom teaching and industry training, Ted has been developing curricula for microcomputer related courses since the 1980s and holds the following certifications: A+, Network+, NetWare 6 CNE and CNI, and MCSE.

The Anti-Socialism Anti-Revisionism of Martin Malia

Two theories--totalitarianism and revisionism--have emerged in Sovietology, attempting to define what comprises the correct application of socialism, and the particular aspects of Soviet socialism. Martin Malia, in his text The Soviet Tragedy-A History of Socialism in Russia, 1917-1991, contends that the Soviet regime was logically totalitarian because totalitarianism is the natural outcome of any attempt to realize textbook Marxism. Stalinism thus represented the peak of the Soviet experiment. Malia argues that later regimes were merely watered-down versions of either Stalin's "hard" war communism or "soft" NEP-style market reforms of the 1920's. He focuses the argument on socialism's inherent flaws. Malia therefore opposes various revisionist claims that Russia, her leaders, and their faulty interpretations of Marxism led to the demise of Soviet socialism. These revisionist arguments imply that under different circumstances full integral socialism could have worked. Malia organizes his book around the major trends of the Soviet experience, while consistently attacking each revisionist claim. He clarifies points, separates utopianism from sober reality, and examines the political and economic costs of socialist policies. Because revisionism views the Marxist ideal sympathetically, Malia's anti-socialism arguments are essentially anti-revisionist.

Meyer writes a valuable and convincing primer on what Buddhists would call "mindfulness" from a dedicated Christian perspective. Using a rich scriptural context, she convinces listeners " to think what you are thinking about". Filled with many anecdotes from ministry, her points are made in a accessible and personable style. The psychology is sound though ensconced in conservative Christian language. Happily, Meyers encourages meditation, both on scripture and in prayer as a way to be in the moment.

I award 5 stars because I am almost at the end of the book in a study group. Each chapter helps me to recognize what areas of my life I want to see changed. It challenges me and gives specific steps to do it. I like that I can hear and review any section while being at home cleaning or to make notes to post to myself as reminders of what I want to commit to accomplish as I learn the principles taught by my favorite Bible teacher, Joyce Meyer. I recommend this book to anyone. We all have our very own deficiencies and these principles teach how to stop blaming others for our actions or to make necessary changes to live a fulfilled life and allow others to enjoy having us around.
Even if you have the book, having the CD version helps to refresh all these concepts IF you want to be “fruitful” as the Bible teaches.
Doy 5 estrellas. Estoy en un grupo donde casi terminamos de estudiar este libro. Cada capitulo me ayuda a reconocer areas de mi vida que quiero cambiar. Me desafia y enseña pasos específicos para hacerlo. Me gusta que puedo oir o revisar cualquier sección mientras me encuentro limpiando en casa o puedo hacer notas para mi misma que pongo a la vista para que me recuerden en los cambios que quiero hacer y que estoy aprendiendo de este libro, con mi instructora favorita de la Biblia, Joyce Meyer. Recomiendo el libro a cualquier persona. El mejor libro que he leido, despues de la Biblia.

Es un libro que todo cristiano debe de tener a la mano, junto a la Biblia. Tiene la facilidad de ayudarte a renovar tu mente cumpliendo el cometido de Rom. 12:2, de una manera tan sencilla y util, que inmediatamente digieres y aplicas. La cantidad de versiculos applicados a tu vida, te serviran de una manera sobrenatural que reconoceras tu cambio no solo tu, si no los que te rodean...lo recomiendo tanto, como que mi marido y yo hemos regalado ya 100 ejemplares de este libro. Para mi este libro, es el libro base de Joyce Meyer, por el cual Dios le mostro su ministerio. Gracias a Dios y a su sierva, que Dios la siga usando abundantemente...
