Certainly not for Beginners

Certainly there are quite a lot of information in this book. But to say it's for beginners is misleading. The book lack organization. Many technical jargon is just put out without explanation. Sentences that need explanation are not explained. If you wanna start from scratch this is not the book for you, you may need to look for another book. However the book may be good as a reference for solving specific problems as done in the later chapters. But frankly I couldn't get any good understanding of TV inners from the first chapters. Also the figures are horrible. Name of ICs in the diagrams do not match the text description. And many diagrams for vital components are just black and white photographs that doesn't show you anything but confuse you.

Again, not recommended for a beginner or as a sole reference.

Lacking in actual substance

This book unfortunately does not live up to its hype. From reading the back cover, you'd think that you could fire up the ol' soldering iron and actually get some work done. Definitive repair guide? Definitely not.
Information is too general, with circuits as block diagrams only. Considering the complexity of TV circuits, this is a no-no. Included schematics don't tell you what ICs or components do, with general references like IC304 and D101. You'd be hard pressed to make sense of a circuit even if you have electronics as a background. What more if you are a beginner?
Better information, guidelines and help can be found over the net in the form of usegroups, independent and manufacturer's web sites.
Bad way to spend 30 bucks...

Modern CRT TVs are complex

Modern CRT TVs are very complex. Many years of evolution have taken place. Can you be an expert in TV repair after reading this book? No! Does the book provide a background about TV circuits and probable repair causes? Yes!

I have an older CRT TV. With HDTV coming on strong, I was considering scraping the old TV in favor of an LCD/Plasma flat screen. After reading the book, I isolated my problem to several capacitors in the power supply. The repair was simple because the problem was easy to find.

This book is not for everyone, but in this age of throw away electronics, it was refreshing for me to find and solve the problem. Call it luck or a quest for personal achievement, but this book helped me.

Kindergarten-Grade 3-This book takes an interesting and unusual approach to a longtime favorite character. Although Mog dies on the first page ("Mog was tired. She was dead tired.- Mog thought, `I want to sleep for ever.' And so she did"), the cat stays around for the duration of the story in the form of a spirit, thinking that the family won't be able to get along without her. The family members are sad at first, but their attention is soon taken up with a new kitten that is afraid of everything. With the help of Mog, it learns to play like a proper cat, and to love its family and be loved in return. Satisfied that her former family is now in good cat paws, Mog's spirit flies up to the sky. Like so many other classic children's book characters, this feline seems frozen in time, cared for by children who never get any older and in a house that always appears the same, providing readers the comfort that accompanies familiarity. But young listeners who know Mog may feel as bereft as her fictional family, and the uninitiated may be taken aback by the abrupt death. The floating spirit in each of the color cartoon illustrations may elicit questions that require some thoughtful adult answers. Although this is an interesting exploration of loss, endings, and new beginnings, for Mog's loyal fans, saying good-bye to her is like killing off Clifford, the big red dog.

About the Author
Judith Kerr escaped to England with her family in 1936, after fleeing Hitler's Germany. During the War she worked for the Red Cross before winning a scholarship to the Central School of Art and Crafts in 1945. She worked as an artist and as a BBC television scriptwriter, before becoming one of the best-loved children's authors of the twentieth century. Judith Kerr has written three novels about her childhood, including 'When Hilter Stole Pink Rabbit', and many picture books.

A beautiful book to help deal with death

I love this book. It arrived today, I ordered it as my dad died 2 months ago then our cat 2 weeks ago. It's all very raw. This is the best book by far that I have seen on the topic for kids - and I even found it useful for me. Lovely concept and beautifully expressed. Well done!

Not like most vocal scores

Most Piano/Vocal scores from Broadway and/or Hollywood include guitar chords in addition to the piano and vocal lines. Most of the songs within this songbook do NOT have the guitar chords published. For piano 'fakers', the chord designations are a must. This is a serious deficiency in this songbook.

On the positive side, all the great music and songs expected were present, and as far as I can tell, with the original piano arrangements.

Be Careful -- Make Sure This Is What You Want

I agree with the reviewer that these are the original piano arrangements. But what that means is that for some selections, the arrangement does not include the melody so unless someone is singing you don't "get" the song you might think you would in the piano part.

The following selections include melody: Anyone Can Whistle, Being Alive, Comedy Tonight, Every Day a Little Death, I Never Do Anything Twice, I Remember, Johanna, The Ladies Who Lunch, The Little Things You Do Together, Losing My Mind, Not While I'm Around, One More Kiss, A Parade in Town, Pretty Women, Send in the Clowns, Sorry Grateful, You Must Meet My Wife (but it's missing part of the song).

These selections are purely accompaniment: Another Hundred People, The Ballad of Sweeney Todd, By the Sea, Could I Leave You? Green Finch and Linnet Bird, Pretty Lady, Remember?

The rest are a hybrid, some melody, some accompaniment: Broadway Baby, I'm Still Here, The Miller's Son.

They're all beautiful arrangements -- just as long as you know what you are and are not getting.

Sondheim's Masterpieces

As a fanatical Sondheim lover and singer, this book was awonderful addition to my collection. Among some of his best earlytitles, this book includes songs like "I Remember", "Losing My Mind", and "Another Hundred People". These are wonderfully written pieces which deserve many books like this one. They are a joy to listen to and even more to play, and I hope everyone will enjoy this book as much as I do.

revealed branding in a manner that is easy to understand and implement in any organization

Before reading the book I was turned off by branding, even though I thought that branding is very beneficial for any organization due to the fact that branding is a complex process that requires huge amounts of resources and money which only corporate size Godzillas can afford to pursue.

Unlike any other literature that I have read in the past, this book has, by using a disruptive approach, revealed branding in a manner that is easy to understand and implement in any organization. As SBFunnel is a dynamic process, it fits perfectly to the rapidly changing environment of the establishments I am involved in. For sure I will implement the SBFunnel principles as soon as possible, one relationship at a time!

I recommend this book not only to every start-up geek but also to corporate suits, because as the book reveals, “Stability is becoming a thing of the past!”

I found the book very useful and practical, since it guides you step-by-step through the SBFunnel. By my opinion it currently represents the best and quickest way to gain the necessary knowledge on how to obtain an optimum brand-market fit. Besides, the book is very well organized and has a number of excellent case studies of various startups with whom the authors have validated their approach.
I am sure the book will be of great assistance to startups, scholars and business students as well during their process of discovering the importance of branding in today’s hypercompetitive economy.

An improvement?

Many people have commented that the Second Edition of the Official (ISC)2 Guide to the CISSP CBK was a big improvement over the first edition. I have to wonder how bad the first edition must have been?

Before getting into the details of my concerns, let's look at the layout of this hardbound, 968 page "brick".

The book is organized in a 1:1 correspondence with the 10 Domains of the CISSP CBK (i.e. one chapter per domain). This organization is nice as compared with the All-In-One CISSP 4th Edition, which has something like 12 chapters to cover the 10 domains (which can make it hard to cross reference concepts).

Each domain is written by a different author (or authors) who are CISSP's and experts in the field covered by the domain. In concept this is a good idea, and in a few places it was clear that the authors tried to impart some real-world knowledge and experience (such as the BCP/DRP chapter). However, it also leads to contrasting writing styles and some issues with "continuity".

As one might expect, many domains have concepts that overlap. On occasion, the text of the book will call attention to areas that relate or overlap with other domains, but this is inconsistent and sometimes results in the reader having some questions in their mind about the 'big picture' of the concepts. Given the CISSP is primarily a managerial level certification, understanding the big picture is critically important.

In general, the content seemed relevant, though the organization left something to be desired (more on that later). However, I was a bit surprised to see quite a bit of disparate information in this book when compared with the official (ISC)2 Review Seminar course material. There were at least a few topics covered in one, but not the other. I would have expected there to be better alignment between two current and "official" (ISC)2 sources, and it left me somewhat questioning which resource to focus on.

Speaking of the content, as compared to the All-In-One CISSP (Shon Harris) book mentioned above, this book is more of a traditional technical guide. Shon Harris' books occasionally interject opinion that borders on 'soapbox' material. And I find her "jokes" to generally not be funny, and often distracting. Some might consider the Official (ISC)2 Guide to be dry in comparison, but in technical reference books I prefer clear and succinct writing.

As mentioned, the layout of the individual chapters could be improved. The book does follow a typical hierarchy for introducing concepts (i.e. the main topic introduced with large, bold font, sub-topics using smaller fonts, italics, etc). However, in many cases the context of the material was not introduced well at the start, leading the reader to question whether a "sub-heading" represents a new topic, or a topic relating to the previous topic. In many cases the material gets nested 5 or 6 layers deep, making it hard to differentiate whether a new section is a sub-topic or a new upper level topic. This is a bit hard to explain so I hope that is clear. Again, this certification is not about memorization, but rather concepts and how they interrelate, so the book's organization is important.

Another area that was lacking was the use of tables, figures, and diagrams. There are some tables, etc, but there really should have been a few more. This could have really helped in providing additional context for some of the topics (see previous paragraph). This is an area where the Shon Harris All-In-One CISSP is better.

I also wish the editor/publisher would have taken a bit more time to improve the index. How can key elements such as "Software Development Lifecycle" and "Common Criteria" not even have index entries? My recommendation is when reading this book and taking notes, be sure to notate page numbers in your own notes for future reference.

There were also the usual amount of typo's and a few technical errors. The quantity of errors in tech books seems to be on a slow, steady rise, so I'd consider this book to be typical or maybe only slightly worse than typical.

Ultimately, for those studying for the CISSP I would recommend this book simply because no single book covers the entire CISSP scope. Couple this book with either the CISSP All-in-One Exam Guide, Fifth Edition, or perhaps the CISSP For Dummies 3rd Edition if you are looking for a cheaper option that might serve an an easier introduction to the material.

UPDATE: I forgot to add that I did pass the CISSP using primarily this book, coupled with the Review Seminar mentioned above. Took the test August 8 of 2010, received notification that I passed in September, and received my certificate in October.

My approach was as follows:

I started studying for the exam in late May, targeting a test date of August 8 (note the date on my review was August 7). I basically counted the number of days I had to prepare, subtracted 1 week for review time and about 7 "off" days to allow for days off or catch up. I also subtracted one week for the review seminar course that I took the week prior to the exam. I then took the number of remaining days an divided the number of pages in the book by that to set a pages per day goal. I think the result was something like 18 or 19 pages per day.

That was my goal - read 19 pages per day and take notes as I read. The next day I'd review the previous day's notes, and read another 19 pages and take notes. I used the Shon Harris book as a supplement to fill in gaps that I felt were unclear.

A Fantastic Resource for the CISSP

As opposed to the rather popular Shon Harris title, the 'AIO CISSP Study Guide', this title provides a more serious and professional presentation of the requisite exam material. It can be heavy going at times, and may require the occasional re-read to ensure that information is sinking in, but then again the subject matter is heavy, and is not to be taken lightly. Not only will this text provide you all you need to know to pass the examination, it will remain as a vital ongoing reference for those professionals who are at the front lines of the Information Security profession.

I Passed the CISSP Exam with only this book

Let me say that I bought the Shon Harris AIO book and could not get through it - too many stories and jokes that I found distracting. In a nutshell the AIO guide is too wordy and bored me highly (although when she gets to the CISSP material it is good as she knows her stuff). With that said I bought this book and boy was I glad I did! Finished the book a week before the exam and spent the last week taking the practice exam included (about 1 hour a day). I really enjoyed the book as it is written by several professionals that specialize in a domain (this changes the pace and ensures you learn from specialists vs a jack of all trades). Now I have taken certification exams before and have found the official books are the best ones to use (this one did not disappoint). Now on to the exam. The exam was the most difficult exam I have ever taken - really the CISSP is no joke. I felt the book (only study material I used) got me assimilated to terminology and theory and my experience made the difference in the exam for me. Since you are supposed to have 5 years experience in the field to take this exam anyways, this book should get you through the theory and your experience should get you through the rest of the test. I think ISC2 has done a wonderful job with this book and its questions (exam like but I did not find any on the actual exam) so that you may see where you stand. I am proof that you can pass with just this book and don't need to waste time with multiple sources of material if you have h security experience required to take the exam. For those without experience, I suggest the SSCP ISC2 credential instead - the CISSP requires an endorsement of your experience anyways (and potential audit) so it may be a waste of your time and money if you don't have the required experience. For those that do, rest assured you can pass with just this book (I did), buy the book with confidence and thank me later.

Update:

The approach I used follows:

1. Take practice test (included) to see weak areas.

2. Read book cover to cover.

3. Take practice exam again.

Take real exam; some tips:

1. Get a good night's rest.

2. Eat lots of carbs and protein the day of the exam.

3. Take a protein bar and water as you will need a break during the exam.

Entertaining Mystery

This was a very entertaining read. The plot has a few threads that eventually all tie together, some of which are both scary and believable, especially when it comes to questioning our border security. I also liked the characters, even though Jake sometimes comes across as a stereotypical P.I. from a 1950's movie. However, I get the feeling that is what the author intended and it works in this case. If you're a fan of an easy reading mystery, then 'Swoop & Squat' will fill the bill quite nicely.

As for a reviewer stating the book is full of typos, I'm not sure what that is about as I only found a few, which is not uncommon in a first edition anyway and certainly didn't detract from the reading experience for me. Also, last I checked, this is a work of fiction and is obviously intended to be both an easier read and entertaining. I liken it to an 'Indiana Jones' movie as it has a few twists and plenty of action, but it's not going to win an Oscar anytime soon. But then again, it's not supposed to. Just grab your popcorn and start reading, you won't be disappointed...
