what I loved most about this book is how Fred encourages us ...

Once again, Fred Mandell masterfully uses the artistic process to teach us about life. In Becoming a Life Change Agent, he showed us how the creative process and artistic skills could help us navigate life’s transitions. In his new book, Can Art Save Us?, Fred uses the creative process to illustrate how we can interact with the world in a more hopeful and healing way.
Sharing his journey, process and thoughts in the creation of Memory Calls, a series of paintings about the first five years of his life, Fred invites us to experience the artistic process. He cautions us about the importance of keeping art and creativity in our lives and shows us how art teaches us about imagination, vision, and uncertainty.
Perhaps, what I loved most about this book is how Fred encourages us all to embrace the artist within and interact with the world in a more comprehensive, empowering, courageous and beautiful way.

No review can do justice to this gem of a book, because it must be read and savored. Can Art Save Us? falls into no simple category; it could only have come from and through Fred Mandell––artist, educator, philosopher, visionary, leadership consultant, family man, and Mensch (a good human being).

To oversimplify, this book is a work of art––a collage of personal memories and musings on memory, the creative process and the function of beauty and art––served up with visual images, poetic language, and mind-stretching ideas. The work is also like a river, in that it flows so naturally, starting with Memory Calls, a legacy painting project capturing his first five years of life, but branching off and carrying the reader along into all sorts of unexpected and interesting byways, without losing its momentum or identity.

The book is also, especially at the end, an exhortation to readers and leaders restore the centrality of the artistic imagination in order to deal creatively with the overwhelming socio-economic, political and ecological challenges of our time. Let the last paragraph speak for itself: “Memory Calls brought me to the realities of creativeness, paradox and beauty. Memory itself brought me back to what endures in the human spirit. And to our fundamental capacity for imagination. And the power of art to change us. And the possibility of a mended world.”

Personal, hopeful, moving, and ultimately inspiring

Reading this book was like going on journey with Fred - as he created a piece or collection of art, as he remembered his family and events from his life, and as you ultimately come to realize that art, true art, isn't just something to enjoy or appreciate, but something that can change you and those around you. The first part of the book is a story both of the present - as Fred is inspired and works on a piece that is really a collection of pieces - and the past - as he finds his life and family and those experiences to be an inspiration or art and life. The second part is a collection of learns. What can art teach us? What can engaging in the creative process do to help us grow and change and lead?

I had to read this book slowly - the moments that occur, the lessons to glean from his stories and experiences. I wanted to read more quickly, but I found that I had to slow myself down and let his lessons and stories connect with something deeper in my experience and lift. And then I would stop, let the ideas percolate for a while and then return to the book for more stories and more life and in the end a reason why art is so important to us individually and as a culture.

Having read many a book or hearing too many talks using sports or warfare or competition as the theme, it is utterly refreshing to find a book that lifts you higher, than urges you to reach for more but from a higher place and motivation. A bigger and better why. This is book to savor and reflect upon.

The best, with minor misgivings

I fell in love with the first edition of this book and intended to use it for a class I plan to teach next year. Then the second edition came out. I particularly love the approach through actual text, making the source come alive so quickly for beginning students. The second edition is, in many ways, an improvement. There is much more in the way of grammatical detail and more exercises, but it "feels" like a lot of this can go way over the heads of teenagers or adults who are not in a college setting. Of course, this IS a college text. My second misgiving is that I have come across several minor typos in the text--for example, one of the graphic illustrations of a vav conversive pi'el verb leaves the dagesh out. Anyone using the book must be alert ahead of time to minor errors in an otherwise fine text--lets hope these are weeded out in later editions.

Good idea but...

The book Biblical Hebrew Text And Workbook 2nd Edition attempts to bring the students immediately into contact with the written text. While this may not be such a bad idea, the problem is that there are too many rules of grammar that have to be dealt with (and are not dealt with very well in my opinion) that it is confusing to the beginner. I bought this book after a first year seminary Biblical Hebrew class and while I am the first to admit that I am no expert in Biblical Hebrew, I cannot say that I would recommend this book to anyone. Anyone wanting to learn the language will be much better served by the Living Biblical Hebrew series by Randall Buth.

One of the greatest books written about the problem of meaninglessness and emptiness in modern life - and the solution...absolute faith (courage) to believe in a "god beyond God." Step off a cliff into nothingness, in full faith that a radiant loving God will build a bridge under your feet as you take each new step...and accompany you -within your own body- inside your heart, in loving compassion. If you are feeling emptiness and meaninglessness and purposeless, then rejoice! What you are feeling is a sacred emptiness, that can now be filled...you only have to ask, and the radiant Divine love of God will fill you overflowing with radiant joy, love, acceptance, peace and serenity. Like sunlight on ice, Divine Grace will melt away all your pain, hurt & loneliness, and replace it with Divine energy. These are the "gifts of the Holy Spirit" that St. Paul writes about in the New Testament Bible. Paul Tillich answers the problem of the existentialist crisis within one's own mind by a call to faith in something you cannot see, but can only understand through a practice of radical faith in the radiant compassion and loving-kindness, total acceptance of a Divine and loving God. A classic work

This is a classic work by one of the great philosopher theologians of the 20th century. I am co-author of the standard biography of Paul Tillich. He was a great teacher and thinker. This is one of his seminal works which was a best seller upon publication and remains so today. Some philosophical/theological background is helpful in reading this extraordinary volume.

Potentially Life-Changing

While I agree with the other reviewers that the subject matter of this book is complex, my experience has been that upon completion, all the pieces fall into place with incredible grace. In a nutshell, we need to practice nourishing the seeds (content) of our consciousness--and unconsciousness--with mindfulness. Mindfullness is the sunshine that nourishes 'wholesome' seeds and enables the transformation of 'unwholesome' seeds, such as anger, envy and desire into peace, love and compassion. What then is mindfulness? Mindfulness is a continuous practice that includes meditation and an effort to live healthily and happily in the present moment, as opposed to regretfully in the past or fearfully in the non-existent future. Suffering occurs because our mind distorts our perceptions and we mistake perception for reality, arriving at erroneous conclusions about the people, places and events that surround us. Once we realize this and begin to achieve greater levels of mindfulness through practice and meditation, we can begin to transform suffering into joy. So, yes, while some of the ideas in this book are complex (such as the concept of interbeing) its essences is elegant in its simplicity.

Incidentally, my father was a Freudian Psychoanalyst and over the course of my life (45) I have spent many hours with him discussing the role of the unconscious in relation to our everyday impulses and actions. I also went through 5 years of intensive psychoanalysis as a young adult. The conceptual base presented in Understanding Our Mind is not altogether different from Freud's treatment of the unconscious. As the author himself points out, the main difference is that Freud emphasizes examining past events rather than transforming their manifestations as mental formations in the present (p.232). I am just now embarking on the path of practicing mindfulness, yet I have little doubt that it will surpass the results achieved through traditional psychoanalytic therapy.

May change the way you look at things

This was a very unexpected book from a very practical teacher like Thich Nhat Hanh, whose books on mindful living continued to inspire me for the past more than ten years. Why, indeed, would he delve into complexities of one of the most elaborate and, dare I say, abstruse philosophies that Buddhism has produced - Yogacara, or the Mind Only school? Having an undue penchant for philosophical discourse, however, I readily grasped at the book, looking in it for an excuse for my passion for abstractions. And I found so much more than what I was looking for.

The key phrase for this book is given in the introduction: "When we understand how our mind works, the practice becomes easier". I was always fascinated by the way the mind works, especially after having read Schopenhauer's "On the fourfould foundation of the law of sufficient reason" (sorry, that's how terrible it sounds), which first revealed to me to what a great extent that which we consider to be 'objective reality' is actually shaped by our mind. Later on, I became interested in Zen/Chan, which doesn't really emphasize philosophical discourse on surface (although some of the most profound philosophical works have also been produced by Chan masters - for instance, Dongshan Liangjie). In this book by Thich Nhat Hanh, Chan meets philosophy again for me (philosophy in the Kantian sense - not as a metaphysical discourse, but as an investigation of the nature and limits of our perception and knowledge). For me, unfortunately, Zen practice continuously has to be supported by intellectual conviction that it is the right thing to do, or after some time I lose it. For those as unfortunate as I am, this is the right book. Even a few lines from it every day, like a medicine, will be a great help if you don't want to veer into the foggy-groggy existence that most of us lead. After all, isn't it cautioning us against this way of life what Thich Nhat Hanh devoted his lifetime to?

This book is as dense as any philosophical treatise may be, except for the fact that each sentence seems to be so incredibly well thought out as to have a practical application to one's life. The number of Sanskrit terms is incredible for Thich Nhat Hanh (there are a couple of pages where there are 50+ of them). But the difference between this work and some PhD dissertation on the Mind Only school is as vast as between heaven and earth, for this man lives what he's talking about, whereas most professors seem to be just churning words.

I agree with the above reviewer that this may be a life changing book. It has to be read very slowly, than probably read over and over again. Then you may go to the original works (which is what I intend to do), and I bet you'll read them with different eyes. But of course the key thing here is to view your life with different eyes.

An Excellent Intermediate to Advanced Resource on Buddhist Thought

As noted by another reviewer, this is not an easy book to read and it's not something to be tackled in large segments. Each of the fifty chapters should be closely examined and considered before moving on to the next. Sometimes, in the context of books on Eastern Philosopy, this is a result of translation or editing problems, however, with this book, it is simply a matter of an incredibly complex subject.

If you are curious about your mind and its ability to transform your world, you will really enjoy this book. If you want to understand meditative techniques, this book is an excellent resource as well. If you are contemplating the purchase of your first book on Buddhism, I would suggest another path, perhaps "Turning the Mind into an Ally," by Sakyong Mipham, which is by no means simple, but well-adapted to communicating with the Western Mind. I would also suggest Thich Nhat Hahn's book "The Miracle of Mindfulness," as a good starting point.

This book is the first of its kind ,very readable and it contains all the information you need. I have read a lot of surgical texts and find this book to have reached an excellent balance between brevity and yet thoroughly covering important basic and clinical concepts.
The DVD is excellent !!! ,dozens of videos demonstrate surgical procedures step by step .
