About the Author

The Late Donald E. deKieffer is a graduate of the University of Colorado (BA, 1968) and Georgetown University Law School (JD, 1971). He has served on the staff of the U.S. Senate, and as General Counsel to the United States Trade Representative, Executive Office of the President. In private practice, Mr. deKieffer has represented more than 60 Fortune 500 companies on international trade policy, with an emphasis on compliance with regulatory schemes, both in the U.S. and abroad. A major part of Mr. deKieffer's practice involves counseling clients on methods for addressing external threats to international supply chains. He travels and lectures at venues around the world and serves as adjunct professor at several universities. Mr. deKieffer resides in McLean, VA.

Some Good. Some Horrendous.

I had to give this book a one-star rating in spite of the good advice about planning and planting a garden. Those parts appear to be useful. Portions of the section dealing with preserving your harvest were not only bad but criminally bad. Ms. Fowler has apparently had astonishingly good luck making jam and jellies if her idea of "sealing" is to fill up a jar, press a disk of greaseproof paper on top and screw on the lid. (Either good luck or a string of involuntary manslaughter charges that she's not telling us about.)

If you want to preserve fruits and vegetables, PLEASE get a reliable resource that tells you in detail how to go about it safely. I've been canning for years and I still pull out "The Complete Book of Home Preserving" by the Ball Company every single time and review the step by step instructions. Hopefully we'll be able to avoid an awkward conversation with the nice man from the Health Department about that unfortunate outbreak of botulism in our neighborhoods.

I'm not afraid of growing vegetables any more!

I've always been intimidated by a vegetable garden, my experience has just been with a handful of flowers around my yard. I don't have much space so I assumed it was pointless to even attempt a vegetable garden. This book has broken down all the myths and assumptions I had about such a garden and I now feel free to play with choices, varieties and locations. I'm not planning on planting enough plants to feed me every meal for every day, but I am going to start planting a slew of veggies that I've been too scared to attempt because I never knew what to do before now. The author breaks down each type of veggie and goes into great specifics about how to grow it, where and when to row it, how to harvest it, etc. I never knew you could plant veggies all mixed up with flowers, I thought they had to be planted like those ugly garden plots I see scattered around. I'm excited about using the plants as part of my pretty flower garden and actually planting more than I thought was possible - without fear!

I did not know of Alys Fowler before this book but now I am a die-hard fan of her writing and her style of gardening which is easy, inviting, effective and very edible, too. Her wisdom comes from a pure love of gardening and her excellent advice is helpful to any level of expertise. I am going to do exactly as Alys Fowler suggests and have my garden and eat it and share the bounty with my neighbors friends and loved ones!

This book didn't measure up

I was not happy with this book. It tells you what can be done with sheet metal forming, but doesn't give you any idea on really how to do it. Gives you pictures on a work in progress, but not any steps on how they got there. I thought this book was not worth the money.

Another Great Book In The Series

Excellent and complete as all of the books by Matt Joseph are. It really strikes a balance by not being too advanced for the beginner nor too slow for the more advanced hobbyist. The illustrations are superb and the writing is fun and never takes itself too seriously. Above all, the author really does a great job giving enough information so that the entire process can be understood. I cannot recommend this or any of Joseph's other books highly enough! Now if we could just get him to write a series on Motorcycle restoration........

this book was very good at explaining what to do in the last couple of pages to two items and the rest of the book only told you what tools to buy and precious little of how to use them very little on tricks of the trade as you would intimate from the cover, probably still worth a read to a complete novice

About the Author

Timothy D. Lee, PhD, is a professor in the department of kinesiology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Lee, whose research on practice and motor learning has been frequently cited, is the author of more than 80 research papers in peer-reviewed publications in the area of motor control and learning. He is also the coauthor, along with Richard Schmidt, of the seminal text Motor Control and Learning: A Behavioral Emphasis, now in its fifth edition.

Lee is the former president of the Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology and also a former editor of both Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport and Journal of Motor Behavior. As an amateur golfer, Lee was ranked 22nd among senior golfers in Ontario in 2010. He also enjoys playing right wing for the Dundas Oldtimer ice hockey team and is a blues music enthusiast. Tim and his wife, Laurie Wishart, reside in Ancaster, Ontario.

One of my favorite books of all time!

Judith Tarr is the queen of historical fantasy! Magical creatures and the mundane world blend seamlessly in this novel set in the time of the Crusades: occasional appearances are made by kings, warriors, and even Saladin himself! One can almost believe that the world was once like this, and that we are unimaginably diminished by the loss of the magic and wonder that once was a part of everyday life. This novel has mystery, romance, adventure, and some of the most fascinating and memorable characters in all fiction. I've read this book over twenty times, never tiring of it, and loving it each time more than the last

Wonderfully Memorable Story

I first read this book when I was in high school, working as a page in the local public library. I read it several times, often enough that I would locate it by its location on the shelf rather than looking up the author in the now defunct card catalog.

Years later I could remember the plot, the color of the cover and elements of the graphical layout of the cover but had forgotten the author or the title. It took me a bit of sleuthing, but thanks to persistence and my degree (by then) in library and information science I tracked it down in a database and had the joy of rediscovering it.

Judith Tarr, in Alamut, created a world in which the boundary between historical events and magic was very thin, and handled the characters beautifully. This book was wonderful to rediscover, and I highly recommend it to fans of historical fantasy. I give it five stars for being one of those stories that embedded itself into my consciousness and never let go.

I have been a fan of Judith Tarr for decades, and her writing never disappoints. This is indeed a fantasy novel, however, as with all of her books, it is rooted firmly in history. It gives insight into the Middle East of Crusader times - the culture, the tensions and the incredible mess the Crusaders made of their efforts to own the Holy Land. If you loved The Hound and the Falcon and its sequels, then you will enjoy this book.
