Mathematics for Self Study - Algebra for the Practical Man

My son is taking Algebra next term and I heard that this book is in a series by J.E. Thompson and was highly recommended by Physicist, Richard Feynman. Thus, I wanted my son to benefit from what he can. The book is more than 70 years old and is probably of higher quality than the drivel put out in this age of a nonsensical and misguided educational system.

Dr Hessayon is the world’s best-selling horticultural author - his Expert series of gardening books have sold over 53 million copies. He has been honoured by Queen Elizabeth who created him an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to British horticulture. The Expert style is hard to define. Like this series, just two complaints

I have had the houseplant book from this series for many years, and it is my bible for houseplants. I especially love the section on what can go wrong with each specific plant and how to remedy it. So when I finally had an outside garden, I got other books in the series, including this one on flowers. My major complaint is that it is organized by the latin name of flowers (which I never know). You can look up the common names in the index, but it's annoying. I am also disappointed that there is no per-plant commentary on what can go wrong and how to treat it. Instead that topic is a separate 'chapter' in the back, general to all the plants. It's still a useful book, and it's what I refer to if I have questions. I just wish it were more like the old houseplant book's format. I've noticed a lot of plant books' primary use is to identify what kind of plant it is and not focus on care instructions and 'what can go wrong and how to treat that' instructions. This book is better than many I've seen, but still weak in that area.

Words but no content; do not buy

This book has so many errors it begs the question: has this book even been edited? A huge oversimplification full of logical errors and disconnected ideas stemming from its lack of content.

I was looking for some actual strategy or perhaps some behind the curtain view of this great football coach. What I got was an oversimplified abstract that feels like a college term paper written the night before it was due.

Make no mistake, this book has words but no content. Do not buy.

Pretty good but no where near as good as their work on Coach Saban

This was an okay read it had a lot more specific football references than the booklet on Coach Saban but a lot of the same ideas which isn't surprising since they are such good friends & have spent so much time mutually growing in their field.

Finds the inner child in all of us and makes us laugh (or, at least, nervously chuckle) in the face of our once-mighty fears

Fran Krause's web comic immediately captures the essence of our, often unique and macabre, childhood fears. His book, a collection of never before seen comics as well as a few of the most popular ones displayed online, is an excellent coffee table book and conversation starter. One would be hard pressed to find a friend or relative who doesn't relate to at least one of Krause's scenarios, which range in tone from light hearted and ridiculous to downright bone-chilling. An absolute must-have for anyone wanting to be amused and unsettled in the same, glorious moment.

Be afraid. The worst could happen.

Fran Krause sees peril all around him, real, potential, or purely fantastical. Based on some of his own fears, as well as some solicited from readers of his blog, he has created a collection of comics encouraging just a little bit more fear. Deep Dark Fears will ring true with many readers. Reactions will range from, "I am scared of the same thing!" to "That's ridiculous!" to "I never thought of that--but now I will!"

I don't worry so much about ghosts or a parallel world in the mirror or my loved ones being reincarnated as pets, who then see me going to the bathroom. But I can see how some might! More compelling are the fears that pretty much all of us can relate to, like being caught publicly doing something on social media, like "Facebook stalking" your old girlfriend. And who can't relate to being afraid of becoming "an old person who makes kids afraid of getting old"?

Krause's humor is on the dark side, funny and thoughtful. His drawings are the sort that makes you feel like anyone could draw them. I mean that in the best sense--the art conveys a sense of shared experience. Deep Dark Fears reminds me of my friend who always seemed to imagine the worst that could happen. Maybe you've never been afraid of being cut in half by the elevator. But pick up Deep Dark Fears and you're sure to find some familiar fears--and maybe some new ones, too.

Hilarious content

I found this book in a store and decided to buy a copy online. I like the fears the comics with them are hilarious. I'm hoping to use a few of them as writing prompts for future exercises. Good stuff.
