Great book but hard to find a used copy that ...

Great book but hard to find a used copy that hasn't lost the 3.5 inch floppy disk with the sample MIDI files. And even if the disk is included, who still has a computer with a 3.5 inch floppy disk drive? I sure don't, so I had to take my diskette in to the local computer repair place and have them burn the data onto a CD for me. What do you do if you get a copy of the book without the disk or if you're unable to read the data because your computer can't handle a 3.5 inch floppy disk? Simple. Contact me and I will promptly email the MIDI files to you, no charge, good karma and all that, one musician to another. How To Improve Your MIDi Files!

I've made a large number of midi files via the trial and error method and used them regularly in live performances. But, until now, I could not find a good book telling me how to make better, more professional, midi's. Some "midi manuals" gave a few tips, but were mostly devoted to a general overview of midi music. The Midi Files gives an excellent intro to basic midi knowledge, but it then goes on to provide a wealth of practical information on how to actually produce better files. Be sure you get a copy with the floppy disk that comes with the book. It has dozens of examples of how the techniques sound when properly applied. The book references the floppy's examples and is just a great tool to get you producing better files, starting with the channel headers and going right through the various techniques to the final entries on the channels. If, like me, you are someone with a little bit of knowledge looking for clear assistance on how to make better files, this is the best book I have found to date (November 2008). This is the only book I have found with this range and depth of practical advice, examples, and background explanation. I almost let the 1996 copyright date throw me off but I am glad I didn't because this is a far better book than the books I have purchased that were printed in 2005 and 2007. Scott.

I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for publishing this book, "The Midi Files", by Rob Young. I'm just past 40 years of age. I've been working with computers my whole life. I've been a musician longer than that. But I only recently took the plunge into Midi. And it was hopeless. I couldn't make head or tails out of the documentation that came with either the synthesiser or the sequencer. I have always been able to pick things up on my own, with the help of the manuals. It wasn't happening. I was really getting down about it.
But then I remembered I'd bought this book.And man, what a book.It is such a good book I can hardly believe it. It really saved my life. Not only does Mr. Young show a great understanding, technically, of the MIDI standard and its various interpretations in hardware and software, and of the pitfalls that we new MIDI exploresrs will be faced with. But he does it all with such amazing musical sense too.
So I don't know what else to say. Thanks. From my heart. This foray into the MIDI world really means alot to me. I've been thinking about it and planning on it for a long time. I've been needing and wanting to get back to music, especial composition, and this was how I was going to do it. When I finally went for it, and then it was going so badly, I was really down on myself. I felt stupid. I thought maybe I was too old for this. But then this book, this one simple book, changed everything. It finally helped me to unlock the door. I still have a long way to go. But at least I'm developing. I'm so appreciative, it's hard to express it. But I hope I have done so, in some small way.

Worth the price, but not complete

I have several other books on data structures, and algorithms. This one presents the subjects in a very straightforward, and understandable manner, but is targeted at beginners (and says so). It doesn't cover the subjects in much detail, but is sufficient to give the reader a pretty good understanding of the subjects presented.
Some of the workshop applets don't work very well, and there is no source code available for them so as to allow the reader to fix them. They are also very slow in loading, probably due to the fact that they are Java applets.
The book omits some fairly basic infomation- for example, it mentions that Trees are a form of a more general family of structures called graphs, but doesn't explain what these are. Trees are some of the most widely used data structures, and any good programmer needs a complete understanding of them. The book presents several different kinds of trees, complete with C++ code, but admits that deleting nodes is complicated and beyond the scope of the book. No code is presented for the reader to understand how complicated the operation is, or how to accomplish it. Without this information, the programmer probably can't use trees. All of my other books on the subject contain this information.
If you're looking for a book on the Standard Template Library, this isn't it. The author says that the reader will have a better understanding of the STLs workings and applications for having the information contained in the book, and that's true.
I would recommend this book for a beginning programmer looking for an overview of what some common data structures and alogirthms are, but not one who wants a book to get his hands dirty and experiment with them. It's by far the lowest priced programming-related book I've purchased in years (but that's not reason enough to buy it).

Very Interactive!

I bought 'Introduction to Algorithm' by Thomas Cormen, and could't understand anything in it. So I looked for easier book, and bought this one. This book use OOP concept to describe the data structures and algorithm. I found all the explanation very clear. It teaches you basic knowledge about algorithm before you move to more advanced books. I also found that the java applets (included on CD with the book) they used to describe the algorithm theory were very helpful. It was just like having a private teacher explaining them for you.
I admit that it is not very complete, like it explains Red-Black Tree but there is no source code, and also no source code for deletion on Binary Tree, you have to get a more advanced book for those. But this book has done its job very well!
If you are majoring computer science, and can't get your teacher explanation about basic algorithms and data structures (ex. Big-Oh notation, quicksort, etc), GET THIS BOOK!

Great for technician level programmers

I consider myself a "technician level" programmer.. in other words, my main job title is somewhere in the realm of "make this electronic device functional" and "the network died.. fix it", with the responsibility for the odd bit of utility programming now and then. Considering this, I use this book as basically a brush-up on elementary algorithms and data structures that come into play when doing that bit of utility code. Computer science types will likely consider this book "Data Structures and Algorithms Lite" as it eschews the grinding proofs and NP discussions in favor of actual code in more of a cook book style. Not a bad book for technicians, though I would have preferred some pseucocode and less language specific stuff, but I suppose that defies the nature of this type of book in the first place.

flawed

Nice simple layout and good selection of phrases, including some not in my other phrasebooks. Sadly, though, quite a few are wrong. For example, in the phrases "It's hot, isn't it?"and "Cold, isn't?" the words dingin and panas are reversed.

In 1922 Himalayan climbers were British gentlemen, and their Sherpa and Tibetan porters were "coolies," unskilled and inexperienced casual laborers. By 1953 Sherpa Tenzing Norgay stood on the summit of Everest, and the coolies had become the "Tigers of the Snow."

Jonathan Neale's absorbing new book is both a compelling history of the oft-forgotten heroes of mountaineering and a gripping account of the expedition that transformed the Sherpas into climbing legends. In 1934 a German-led team set off to climb the Himalayan peak of Nanga Parbat, the ninth highest mountain on earth. After a disastrous assault in 1895, no attempt had been made to conquer the mountain for thirty-nine years. The new Nazi government was determined to prove German physical superiority to the rest of the world. A heavily funded expedition was under pressure to deliver results. Like all climbers of the time, they did not really understand what altitude did to the human body. When a hurricane hit the leading party just short of the summit, the strongest German climbers headed down and left the weaker Germans and the Sherpas to die on the ridge. What happened in the next few days of death and fear changed forever how the Sherpa climbers thought of themselves. From that point on, they knew they were the decent and responsible people of the mountain.

Jonathan Neale interviewed many old Sherpa men and women, including Ang Tsering, the last man off Nanga Parbat alive in 1934. Impeccably researched and superbly written, Tigers of the Snow is the compelling narrative of a climb gone wrong, set against the mountaineering history of the early twentieth century, the haunting background of German politics in the 1930s, and the hardship and passion of life in the Sherpa valleys.

Among the many accounts of mountain climbing in the Himalayas, Neale could not find any that focused on the Sherpas as an entity in their own right. So he resolved to make good the deficit by writing the history of the porters whose image has evolved from that of unskilled laborers to "tigers of the snow." Neale underscores that Sherpas view expeditions as a livelihood, making them more cautious about risks than most foreigners seeking to summit. His question to them--"Why do foreigners climb mountains?"--provoked laughter as he trekked around Sherpa villages conducting oral interviews. On that journey, he encountered Ang Tsering, who had been a porter on a 1934 siege of Nanga Parbat by a German group. It was a disaster, but Neale deems it the "turning point" in Sherpa history because it changed forever how the porters thought of themselves. Although occasionally digressive, Neale engagingly profiles the Sherpas' association with Western alpinists. Gilbert Taylor

About the Author
Jonathan Neale was born in New York, grew up in India and Texas, and lives in England. He has written three nonfiction books, three novels, and eleven plays. Neale has done anthropological field research with nomads in Afghanistan, sailed the Atlantic in a small boat, worked for several years as an AIDS counselor, written a Ph.D. thesis on naval mutinies in eighteenth-century Britain, and was part of the organizing committee for the protests against the G8 in Genoa in 2001. This book grew out of his love for trekking in the Himalayas.

This is a book of absolute necessity for anyone who claims to be a mountaineer, and there are few true mountaineers from any school of the art anymore. Showing one of the - if not the first - crucial turning points for the Sherpa people as simple labourors for foolhardy, selfish foreigners to the truest examples of mountaineers on the world's great peaks.

For the history alone, and for Neale's obvious reverence for the Sherpas of Nanga Parbat, this book is an important addition to mountain literature.
