Native Foreigners: Jewish-Polish Poetry Between the World Wars, by Aniela Gregorek, Jerzy Gregorek

Poetry. Jewish Studies. Selected and translated from the Polish by Aniela and Jerzy Gregorek. "In their preface to this anthology, translators Aniela and Jerzy Gregorek say that they hope we will experience what they themselves did when they encountered these poems in the original Polish. Surely, they can rest easy. Reading the fourteen heartsongs of NATIVE FOREIGNERS, you will be struck, as I've been, almost to silence by their depth of symbolic memory, by their intimacy, by the various diasporic losses these poet exiles had to endure—we do not even have birth—&/or death-dates for several of them. Their lyrics, however stark, however sad and filled with regret, were their consolation. Accompanied, now, by evocative drawings done by a genius, the poets are at last safe, will remain immortal within us as we read them."—William Heyen, Author, SHOAH TRAIN (Etruscan Press, 2003), National Book Award finalist

Review
Wladyslaw Szlengel said this about his work: I was supposed to read these poems, these documents, to human beings who believed they would survive . . . but comrades to my wanderings disappeared and the poems became in one hour the poems which I read to the dead. This is the context in which the poems presented in Aniela and Jerzy Gregorek's Native Foreigners: Polish-Jewish Poetry Between the World Wars were rescued and brilliantly translated from the original Polish. Among the fourteen poems presented here, the fiercely precise Nothing New (Nihil Novi) by Szlengel is especially moving, as are the powerful, pre-Holocaust meditation Generation (Pokolenie) by Perec Nowomiast; Mieczyslaw Braun's darkly wrought jewel, Refugees& (Uchodzcy); the beautiful short poem Sabbath (Sobota) by Maurycy Szymel; and the haunting concluding poem, Heinrich Heine, by Juliusz Wit. Lines like Nowomiast's our childhood vanished years ago / the whole world ashed, grayed, and faded still resonate today. Riches like these, and Jerzy Feiner's black-and-white illustrations, are gifts from a tormented Jewish past, that was, all-at-once, steeped in the history of a survivor people, torn by conflicting allegiances, robustly creative, and moving inevitably toward modernity and cataclysm. --Charles Fishman Editor, Blood to Remember: American Poets on the Holocaust (2007) Author, In the Path of Lightning: Selected Poems (2012) --In Praise of Native Foreigners Section

In the finest tradition of Cross-Cultural Communications, a truly unique and beautifully designed little volume provides a first and inimitable good hard look into a vast cultural realm that you might otherwise never know existed. This book is an anthology of an anthology: a collection of five hundred poems written by Jewish authors in the Polish language between the two world wars, further sharply anthologized down to poems, provided here in their entirety, in the original Polish with facing English translation. This was the springtime of a country that had been wholly wiped off the map by the larger powers in the late eighteenth century, came back after World War I to win a massive territory and establish the new Polish Republic that everyone thought would last for many centuries. Various of its minority culture thrived like never before. But it was itself to be divided again by larger neighbors in 1939, and the Nazis would murder close to the entirety of its Jewish minority, which numbered over three million in the interwar years. At least within those circles interested in Yiddish literature and culture, the Polish Yiddish literary center has been immortalized by the writings of Isaac Bashevis Singer, Joseph Opatoshu, Sholem Ash, and many other Yiddish writers. Less well known are the Hebrew language authors. This book is dedicated to Jewish poets who wrote in neither Jewish language of literary currency, but in the Polish language, and are largely, and sadly, forgotten by Jews and Poles alike. By the very act of choosing Polish for their poetry, though I dare say Yiddish was their first language, they were making the conscious and public choice of joining the mainstream culture in a major patriotic dedication of their poetic talent and their years. Ipso facto, by way of their choice of language, these Jewish poets are not only making a patriotic statement of self-inclusion in the majority culture. They are also speaking not so much to fellow Jews as to the general Polish Poland, and in a deeper sense, to the new Europe in the making. That discourse includes frank and open dealing with the country s (and Europe s) illness known as antisemitism, and it is to this book s great credit that this too is on the poetic table along with all the other topics, not peering down from a curtain of retrospective correctness. This book brings to the English reader an enchanting chapter of Polish Jewish culture that we barely knew existed. Cross-Cultural Communications Press has again broken the barrier of our flat mass media culture to seek out a beautiful and unknown literature. --Dovid Katz Author: Words on Fire: The Unfinished Story of Yiddish Editor: online blog DefendingHistory --In Praise of Native Foreigners Section

Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best Books of the Month, June 2012: On the day of their fifth wedding anniversary, Nick's wife Amy disappears. There are signs of struggle in the house and Nick quickly becomes the prime suspect. It doesn't help that Nick hasn't been completely honest with the police and, as Amy's case drags out for weeks, more and more vilifying evidence appears against him. Nick, however, maintains his innocence. Told from alternating points of view between Nick and Amy, Gillian Flynn creates an untrustworthy world that changes chapter-to-chapter. Calling Gone Girl a psychological thriller is an understatement. As revelation after revelation unfolds, it becomes clear that the truth does not exist in the middle of Nick and Amy's points of view; in fact, the truth is far more dark, more twisted, and more creepy than you can imagine. Gone Girl is masterfully plotted from start to finish and the suspense doesn't waver for one page. It's one of those books you will feel the need to discuss immediately after finishing because the ending doesn't just come; it punches you in the gut. --Caley Anderson

From Author Gillian Flynn

You might say I specialize in difficult characters. Damaged, disturbed, or downright nasty. Personally, I love each and every one of the misfits, losers, and outcasts in my three novels. My supporting characters are meth tweakers, truck-stop strippers, backwoods grifters ...

But it's my narrators who are the real challenge.

In Sharp Objects, Camille Preaker is a mediocre journalist fresh from a stay at a psychiatric hospital. She's an alcoholic. She's got impulse issues. She's also incredibly lonely. Her best friend is her boss. When she returns to her hometown to investigate a child murder, she parks down the street from her mother's house "so as to seem less obtrusive." She has no sense of whom to trust, and this leads to disaster.

Camille is cut off from the world but would rather not be. In Dark Places, narrator Libby Day is aggressively lonely. She cultivates her isolation. She lives off a trust fund established for her as a child when her family was massacred; she isn't particularly grateful for it. She's a liar, a manipulator, a kleptomaniac. "I have a meanness inside me, real as an organ," she warns. "Draw a picture of my soul and it'd be a scribble with fangs." If Camille is overly grateful when people want to befriend her, Libby's first instinct is to kick them in their shins.

In those first two novels, I explored the geography of loneliness--and the devastation it can lead to. With Gone Girl, I wanted to go the opposite direction: what happens when two people intertwine their lives completely.I wanted to explore the geography of intimacy--and the devastation it can lead to. Marriage gone toxic.

Gone Girl opens on the occasion of Amy and Nick Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. (How romantic.) Amy disappears under very disturbing circumstances. (Less romantic.) Nick and Amy Dunne were the golden couple when they first began their courtship. Soul mates. They could complete each other's sentences, guess each other's reactions. They could push each other's buttons. They are smart, charming, gorgeous, and also narcissistic, selfish, and cruel.

They complete each other--in a very dangerous way.

Review
A People Magazine Best Book of the Year
New York Times Janet Maslin's 10 Favorite Books of 2012
Edgar Award Nominee for Best Novel
Anthony Award Nominee for Best Novel

“Ice-pick-sharp… Spectacularly sneaky… Impressively cagey… Gone Girl is Ms. Flynn’s dazzling breakthrough. It is wily, mercurial, subtly layered and populated by characters so well imagined that they’re hard to part with — even if, as in Amy’s case, they are already departed. And if you have any doubts about whether Ms. Flynn measures up to Patricia Highsmith’s level of discreet malice, go back and look at the small details. Whatever you raced past on a first reading will look completely different the second time around.”
—Janet Maslin, New York Times

“An ingenious and viperish thriller… It’s going to make Gillian Flynn a star… A great, breathless read...Flynn has created a genuinely creepy villain you don't see coming. People love to talk about the banality of evil. You’re about to meet a maniac you could fall in love with.”
—Jeff Giles, Entertainment Weekly

“An irresistible summer thriller with a twisting plot worthy of Alfred Hitchcock. Burrowing deep into the murkiest corners of the human psyche, this delectable summer read will give you the creeps and keep you on edge until the last page.”
—People (four stars)

“[A] thoroughbred thriller about the nature of identity and the terrible secrets that can survive and thrive in even the most intimate relationships. Gone Girl begins as a whodunit, but by the end it will have you wondering whether there’s any such thing as a who at all.”
—Lev Grossman, Time

“How did things get so bad? That’s the reason to read this book. Gillian Flynn — whose award-winning Dark Places and Sharp Objects also shone a dark light on weird and creepy, not to mention uber dysfunctional characters — delves this time into what happens when two people marry and one spouse has no idea who their beloved really is.”
—USA Today, Carol Memmott

“It’s simply fantastic: terrifying, darkly funny and at times moving. The minute I finished it I wanted to start it all over again. Admirers of Gillian Flynn’s previous books, Sharp Objects and Dark Places, will be ecstatic over Gone Girl, her most intricately twisted and deliciously sinister story, dangerous for any reader who prefers to savor a novel as opposed to consuming it whole in one sitting….”
—Associated Press, Michelle Weiner

“Gillian Flynn’s third novel is both breakneck-paced thriller and masterful dissection of marital breakdown… Wickedly plotted and surprisingly thoughtful, this is a terrifically good read.”
—Boston Globe

“That adage of no one knows what goes on behind closed doors moves the plot of Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn's suspenseful psychological thriller… Flynn's unpredictable plot of Gone Girl careens down an emotional highway where this couple dissects their marriage with sharp acumen… Flynn has shown her skills at gripping tales and enhanced character studies since her debut Sharp Objects, which garnered an Edgar nod, among other nominations. Her second novel Dark Places made numerous best of lists. Gone Girl reaffirms her talent.”
—South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Oline Cogdill

“A great crime novel, however, is an unstable thing, entertainment and literature suspended in some undetermined solution. Take Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, the third novel by one of a trio of contemporary women writers (the others are Kate Atkinson and Tana French) who are kicking the genre into a higher gear… You couldn’t say that this is a crime novel that’s ultimately about a marriage, which would make it a literary novel in disguise. The crime and the marriage are inseparable. As Gone Girl works itself up into an aria of ingenious, pitch-black comedy (or comedic horror — it’s a bit of both), its very outlandishness teases out a truth about all magnificent partnerships: Sometimes it’s your enemy who brings out the best in you, and in such cases, you want to keep him close.”
—Salon

“Ms. Flynn writes dark suspense novels that anatomize violence without splashing barrels of blood around the pages… But as in her other books, Ms. Flynn has much more up her sleeve than a simple missing-person case. As Nick and Amy's alternately tell their stories, marriage has never looked so menacing, narrators so unreliable.”
—Wall Street Journal

“A portrait of a marriage so hilariously terrifying, it will make you have a good hard think about who the person on the other side of the bed really is. This novel is so bogglingly twisty, we can only give you the initial premise: on their fifth anniversary, Nick Dunne’s beloved wife Amy disappears, and all signs point to very foul play indeed. Nick has to clear his name before the police finger him for Amy’s murder.”
—Time

“Readers who prefer more virulent strains of unreality will appreciate the sneaky mind games of Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, a thriller rooted in the portrait of a tricky and troubled marriage.”
—New York Times

“[Flynn has] quite outdone herself with a tale of marital strife so deliciously devious that it moves the finish line on The War of the Roses… A novel studded with disclosures and guided by purposeful misdirection… Flynn delivers a wickedly clever cultural commentary as well as a complex and driven mystery… What fun this novel is.”
—New York Daily News

“Flynn’s brilliantly constructed and consistently absorbing third novel begins on the Dunnes’ fifth wedding anniversary… The novel, which twists itself into new shapes, works as a page-turning thriller, but it’s also a study of marriage at its most destructive.”
—Columbus Dispatch

“Gillian Flynn's barbed and brilliant Gone Girl has two deceitful, disturbing, irresistible narrators and a plot that twists so many times you'll be dizzy. This "catastrophically romantic" story about Nick and Amy is a "fairy tale reverse transformation" that reminded me of Patricia Highsmith in its psychological suspense and Kate Atkinson in its insanely clever plotting.”
—Minneapolis Star-Tribune

“For a creepy, suspenseful mystery, Ms. Pearl suggested Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, a novel due out this week. "You will not be able to figure out the end at all. I could not sleep the night after I read it. It's really good," Ms. [Nancy] Pearl said. "It's about the way we deceive ourselves and deceive others."”
—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

“Gillian Flynn's new novel, Gone Girl, is that rare thing: a book that thrills and delights while holding up a mirror to how we live… Through her two ultimately unreliable narrators, Flynn masterfully weaves the slow trickle of critical details with 90-degree plot turns… Timely, poignant and emotionally rich, Gone Girl will peel away your comfort levels even as you root for its protagonists—despite your best intuition.”
—San Francisco Chronicle

“Flynn’s third noir thriller recently launched to even more acclaim than the first two novels, polishing her reputation for pushing crime fiction to a new literary level and as a craftsman of deliciously twisting and twisted plots.”
—Kansas City Star

“I picked up Gone Girl because the novel is set along the Mississippi River in Missouri and the plot sounded intriguing. I put it down two days later, bleary-eyed and oh-so-satisfied after reading a story that left me surprised, disgusted, and riveted by its twists and turns… A good story presents a reader with a problem that has to be resolved and a few surprises along the way. A great story gives a reader a problem and leads you along a path, then dumps you off a cliff and into a jungle of plot twists, character revelations and back stories that you could not have imagined. Gone Girl does just that.”
—St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“To call Gillian Flynn's new novel almost review-proof isn't a put-down, it's a fact. That's because to give away the turn-of-the-screw in this chilling portrait of a marriage gone wrong would be a crime. I can say that Gone Girl is an ingenious whodunit for both the Facebook generation and old-school mystery buffs. Whoever you are, it will linger, like fingerprints on a gun… Flynn's characters bloom and grow, like beautiful, poisonous plants. She is a Gothic storyteller for the Internet age.”
—Cleveland Plain Dealer

“The setup of Gone Girl lulls readers with what appears to be a done-too-often plot, but, oh, how misleading that is. This thriller is told in alternating voices, a risky form of narrative that works masterfully here because the characters are so distinct and convincing…. The first half of the story leads readers on a merry chase and gives the term "red herring" new meaning. The second half takes readers on a calculated descent into madness. The ending…is one of the most chilling we've seen in recent years.”
—The Sacramento Bee, Allen Pierleoni

“If you do have room in your summer reading for new mysteries, pack Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl. It's my pick for one of the summer's best.”
—Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

“In this fast-paced thriller, Flynn tracks the disintegration of a marriage and asks: How does a couple go from uttering passionate vows to living separate lives?”
—All You

“Gillian Flynn’s terrific psychological thriller, Gone Girl, wanders into an alternate criminality, to the darkest corners of mind and matrimony, using Occam’s razor to slit its own throat… Aside from the plot’s high entertainment value, Flynn has buttressed her book with humor and great writing.”
—The Daily Beast

“Gone Girl is a dark, satisfying, psychological thriller… Gone Girl is at times brilliant, compelling, surprising, diabolical, and it’s definitely dark and twisted… It ranks as one of the best books I’ve read in the past year…I’d highly recommend it if you’re a fan of psychological thrillers or just plain great fiction.”
—Examiner.com

“Pick up the sharp, mercilessly entertaining psychological thriller Gone Girl, written by Gillian Flynn as though with a razor, giggling all the while.”
—Vanity Fair

“Gone Girl [is] a thriller with an insane twist and an insidiously realistic take on marriage.”
—New York magazine

“A twisting, turning, zooming-up-the-charts thriller.”
—Real Simple, announcing their book club pick

“An unnerving, gorgeously written marital thriller that features one of the most compelling narrators in recent memory… Anyway, go read Gone Girl. It's quite good.”
—The Atlantic Wire

“Buy Gone Girl and don't settle down for a long winter's nap or any kind of nap. I read it in two days, nonstop, useless for anything but my own incredible pleasure.”
—Liz Smith, New York Social Diary

“Gillian Flynn’s killer thriller is unputdownable, and just when you think you know where she’s going, she’s gone.”
—DailyCandy.com

“A satisfyingly scathing take on a marriage so broken even the truth is built on lies.”
—Family Circle

“If, instead, you're a fan of gripping, well-crafted tales about complex relationships, try Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.”
—AARP.org

“After a chilling, bombshell twist, you won’t know which clues to trust nor whom to believe.”
—Woman’s Day

Flynn’s ability to reach further and further into the deep, dark recesses of the human psyche brings a much greater edge and feeling of suspense to this novel. Gone Girl is a fast-paced, always surprising page-turner of a book…Gone Girl is a superbly crafted novel by a talented and daring young writer and it will keep you guessing until the very last sentence.”
—Cincinnati City Beat, John Kelly

“A highly original thriller that’s also a razor-sharp depiction of a relationship gone off the rails.”
—Parade

“Masterfully plotted.”
—Vogue.com

“Dark yet funny with a devious twist, this is everything that made Flynn’s Sharp Objects a bestseller—but better.”
—Redbook

“The story unfolds in precise and riveting prose…even while you know you're being manipulated, searching for the missing pieces is half the thrill of this wickedly absorbing tale.”
—Oprah.com

“Full of midnight-black wit and gorgeous writing…About halfway through the book, something happens…That’s the moment you should check the clock and firmly put the book down if you have to rise early the next day. Because trust me, if you keep reading, you won’t stop till you finish it.”
—Dallas Morning News, Joy Tipping

“Gillian Flynn's third mystery is burned-coffee black and flavored with cyanide. (As far as I'm concerned, those are compliments of the highest order.)…Flynn is a master manipulator, deftly fielding multiple unreliable narrators, sardonic humor, and social satire in a story of a marriage gone wrong that makes black comedies like “The War of the Roses” and “Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf” look like scenes from a honeymoon. Veteran mystery readers may see as far as the opening of the second act, but Flynn has more surprises in store on her way to the sucker-punch of an ending. It is, in a word, amazing.”
—Christian Science Monitor, Yvonne Zipp

“A perfect wife’s disappearance plunges her husband into a nightmare as it rips open ugly secrets about his marriage and, just maybe, his culpability in her death… One of those rare thrillers whose revelations actually intensify its suspense instead of dissipating it. The final pages are chilling.”
—Kirkus (starred review)

“[W]hat looks like a straightforward case of a husband killing his wife to free himself from a bad marriage morphs into something entirely different in Flynn’s hands. As evidenced by her previous work (Sharp Objects, 2006, and Dark Places, 2009), she possesses a disturbing worldview, one considerably amped up by her twisted sense of humor. Both a compelling thriller and a searing portrait of marriage, this could well be Flynn’s breakout novel. It contains so many twists and turns that the outcome is impossible to predict.”
—Booklist (starred review)

"Flynn cements her place among that elite group of mystery/thriller writers who unfailingly deliver the goods...Once again Flynn has written an intelligent, gripping tour de force, mixing a riveting plot and psychological intrigue with a compelling prose style that unobtrusively yet forcefully carries the reader from page to page."
—Library Journal (starred review)

"Flynn masterfully lets this tale of a marriage gone toxically wrong gradually emerge through alternating accounts by Nick and Amy, both unreliable narrators in their own ways. The reader comes to discover their layers of deceit through a process similar to that at work in the imploding relationship. Compulsively readable, creepily unforgettable, this is a must read for any fan of bad girls and good writing."
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Gone Girl is one of the best and most frightening portraits of psychopathy I've ever read. Nick and Amy manipulate each other with savage, merciless and often darkly witty dexterity. This is a wonderful and terrifying book about how the happy surface normality and the underlying darkness can become too closely interwoven to separate.”
—Tana French, New York Times bestselling author of Faithful Place and Into the Woods

“The plot has it all. I have no doubt that in a year’s time I’m going to be saying that this is my favorite novel of 2012. Brilliant.”
—Kate Atkinson, New York Times bestselling author of Started Early, Took My Dog and Case Histories

“Gone Girl builds on the extraordinary achievements of Gillian Flynn's first two books and delivers the reader into the claustrophobic world of a failing marriage. We all know the story, right? Beautiful wife disappears; husband doesn't seem as distraught as he should be under the circumstances. But Flynn takes this sturdy trope of the 24-hour news cycle and turns it inside out, providing a devastating portrait of a marriage and a timely, cautionary tale about an age in which everyone's dreams seem to be imploding.”
—Laura Lippman, New York Times bestselling author of The Most Dangerous Thing and I’d Know You Anywhere

“Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl is like Scenes from a Marriage remade by Alfred Hitchcock, an elaborate trap that’s always surprising and full of characters who are entirely recognizable. It’s a love story wrapped in a mystery that asks the eternal question of all good relationships gone bad: How did we get from there to here?”
—Adam Ross, New York Times bestselling author of Mr. Peanut

“Just this minute I finished a week of feeling betrayed, misled, manipulated, provoked, and misjudged, not to mention having all my expectations confounded.  Considering how compulsively I kept coming back for more, I am seriously thinking of going back to page one and doing it all again.”
—Arthur Phillips, author of The Tragedy of Arthur

“I cannot say this urgently enough: you have to read Gone Girl. It’s as if Gillian Flynn has mixed us a martini using battery acid instead of vermouth and somehow managed to make it taste really, really good. Gone Girl is delicious and intoxicating and delightfully poisonous. It’s smart (brilliant, actually). It’s funny (in the darkest possible way). The writing is jarringly good, and the story is, well...amazing.  Read the book and you'll discover—among many other treasures—just how much freight (and fright) that last adjective can bear.”
—Scott Smith, New York Times bestselling author of The Ruins and A Simple Plan

“Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl reminds me of Patricia Highsmith at the top of her game. With Gone Girl, she’s placed herself at the top of the short list of authors who have mastered the art of crafting a tense story with terrifyingly believable characters.”
—Karin Slaughter, New York Times bestselling author of Fallen

"Gone Girl manages to be so many stellar things all at once—suspenseful, inventive, chilling, funny, unsettling—as well as beautifully plotted and fiercely well-written. Gillian Flynn is a thrilling writer.”
—Kate Christensen, author of The Great Man

“Reminds suspense readers of the old Alfred Hitchcock stories...This is one puzzle you do not want to miss.”
—Amy Lignor, Suspense Magazine

“Absorbing thriller…In masterly fashion, Flynn depicts the unraveling of a marriage – and of a recession-hit Midwest – by interweaving the wife’s diary entries with the husband’s first person account.”
—New Yorker

“A psychological thriller reminiscent of Hitchcock.”
—Aspen Daily News

“Devilishly clever he said/she said thriller.”
—AJC.com, Atlanta Journal Constitution

“Flynn’s sly and rippingly suspenseful novel, Gone Girl, is one of those novels it’s hard not to try and shanghai other people into reading, as in immediately. Flynn (Sharp Objects, Dark Places) lays down a vivid and plainspoken narrative that can read like the most jet-fueled of airport thrillers but is still bejeweled with sparkling asides and dead-on commentary. Her writing is, as needed, funny, perceptive, headslappingly honest, or sometimes an amalgam of the three. That this all happens in a book whose plot seems at first ripped from a Dateline NBC true crime is all the more impressive.”
—PopMatters.com

“A riveting novel, a Midwestern noir with completely unreliable narrators.”
—Knoxville Metro Plus

“Part thriller, part macabre love story…The book is told deliciously…The twists and turns are never obvious.”
—New York Post

“Dark yet funny with a devious twist, this is everything that made Flynn’s Sharp Objects a bestseller—but better.”
—Redbook

The summer thriller is filled with enough suspense and twists to keep any beach reader happy, but it is also a book about writing. The main characters are avid readers, and they write letters, articles, journals, kid’s books and memoirs. The novel references other books, little Easter eggs nestled in the plot.”
—MediaBistro

“A fiendishly clever tale of a marriage gone toxic, and revenge exacted to a disturbingly lethal degree.”
—BookPage

“Flynn keeps us guessing with equal parts charm and menace. An addictive read.”
—More magazine, Alice LaPlante

“After a chilling, bombshell twist, you won’t know which clues to trust nor whom to believe. Told from two perspectives, Gone Girl forces you to ask yourself, what would you do and who dunnit?”
—Woman’s Day

Flynn’s ability to reach further and further into the deep, dark recesses of the human psyche brings a much greater edge and feeling of suspense to this novel. Gone Girl is a fast-paced, always surprising page-turner of a book. It’s not only a murder mystery, but a commentary on the disappearance in the last decade of nearly everything we hold near and dear, from jobs to our parents’ health and welfare to the landscape of our cities and towns…Beginning with Amy’s sudden disappearance, to the local police department’s slipshod investigation and the media’s obsessive coverage, Gone Girl is a thrilling roller coaster of a ride with enough twists and turns to give the reader whiplash…Flynn deserves credit for creating not just an exciting murder mystery, but also forcing us to look at the lies we tell ourselves.  Gone Girl is a superbly crafted novel by a talented and daring young writer and it will keep you guessing until the very last sentence.”
—Cincinnati City Beat

“Gone Girl is a superbly constructed, ingeniously paced and absolutely terrifying.  You begin by thinking that all marriages are a bit like this: they start with high hopes and get bogged down in nagging and money worries.  But then the psycho-drama creeps up on you with chilling power.  A five-star suspense mystery.”
—A.N. Wilson, Reader’s Digest (UK)

“Gone Girl is as skillfully creepy as her previous work… A chilling, stylish read about another unknowable woman.”
—Elle (UK)

“The married duo in Gillian Flynn’s superb third novel takes the idea of unreliable narrators to a whole new level. When Nick Dunne’s lovely wife Amy is violently abducted on their fifth wedding anniversary, the police and the press immediately put Nick in the frame for her murder.  Amy’s friends testify that she was afraid of her husband, and the missing woman’s diary backs up their impressions.  Nick’s computer is full of inexplicable searches, his mobile phone is plagued by mysterious calls and his own inner monologue offers a darker perspective on amazing Amy and the state of their turbulent marriage.  Flynn keeps the accelerator firmly to the floor, ratcheting up the tension with wildly unexpected plot twists, contradictory stories and the tantalizing feeling that nothing is as it seems.  Deviously good.”
—Marie Claire (UK)

Fiendishly clever mystery novel
By William Merrill
In the first few pages of Gillian Flynn's new novel Gone Girl, I was thinking, "This is it -- one of those rare novels that's unique and totally engrossing, cleverly plotted so that each new development has me astounded and eager to find out what happens next." Then the story continued as Midwestern husband Nick began to deal with his wife Amy's sudden disappearance and some gradually revealed details that might cast doubt on his own innocence in the matter. During that time, the book dropped down from the level of extraordinary to merely somewhat intriguing. However, once I reached Part Two of Gone Girl ("Boy Meets Girl"), it was like Ms Flynn kicked it up a notch, and the book became amazing again. Without giving any spoilers, Part Two unveils some major plot twists that cast Amy's status in an entirely new light. From that point on, the story moves along in powder keg fashion: the fuse has been lit, and it's only a question of how long 'til the explosion, and how much damage will be done when it happens. Flynn has a distinctive writing style that really involved me in what was going on with her two main characters. I had previously purchased but not yet read her Dark Places (after several recommendations). Now I will have to read it, and also get her first book, Sharp Objects. Only one warning, though: Gone Girl contains a fair amount of foul language. This was not a problem for me, but it might be for some readers.

4.5-Star Writing, 1-Star Ending - Thoroughly Unsatisfying
By Daniel Lewis
Does the ending of this book leave you a) wishing you hadn't read it in the first place; b) asking, "where's the resolution?" c) feeling thoroughly unsatisfied; or d) all of the above. Answer: d

Think of a life experience you've had that started great only to bomb out at the end. Like a promising date that was going really well--only to be ruined by a nasty argument at the end of the evening. You go to bed feeling empty, unfulfilled. That's what reading this novel was like for me. Starts great, quickly becomes a can't-put-it-down page turner, then completely fizzles at the end, leaving you unsatisfied with the novel's lack of resolution.

That said, I agree with most of the positive comments about the book: "Fiendishly clever," "Totally engrossing," Gripping and addictive." "Well-plotted," etc. Does Gillian Flynn have excellent writing chops? Does she masterfully develop psychologically complex, multidimensional characters? Present penetrating insights into the nature of modern marriage and relationships? Write pitch-perfect dialog? Absolutely. She just needs to learn how to finish. Develop resolution.

One thing Flynn might want to learn to use to her advantage in future novels is the "recency effect," which simply states that the last thing you see or experience in a given situation or event is more accessible in your memory, and therefore more likely to be remembered by you then those things that occurred in the beginning or middle of the experience. Given the novel's lack of resolution and totally unsatisfying ending, the last thing I remember about the book is my feeling of utter disappointment.

Great read - apart from the ending
By Amazon Customer
Amy and Nick are married for five years, but there is not much harmony left. All of a sudden, Amy is missing. And from there, a more and more surprising and devious plot develops, cleverly and elegantly put together by a very talented writer.

It is difficult to talk about the plot without risking spoilers. So let's say this: It is not a conventional thriller. There are twists and totally surprising developments, we are getting manipulated and are lied to by both protagonists. It's not only a thriller, the book is also about unconventional truths about love and marriage. Sadly, the ending is a disappointment. Best not to expect too much from it and just enjoy the reading of the novel as such.

The book is always straightforward and readable, but maybe there are a few digressions too many. I can't help but feeling that nowadays thriller writers feel the need to expand their books to 600 pages when 400 would have done just as well. That's stupid, because it automatically weakens the suspense.

Gillian Flynn really deconstructed love and marriage here a lot, so I have a suggestion for readers who would like to read a (shorter) crime novel which is thrilling, full of dark humor and lets you believe in love again: Heads Off (A Lisa Becker Mystery).

A "screenwriting book-formatting" which like the name is says
By Ricardo
There's two kinds of books, you need to get. A "screenwriting book-formatting" which like the name is says; learn the proper format to write an screenplay. And the second is "screenwriting book-storytelling" which is this book. I picked a sample of this book at my local library, and it covers a profound depth of psychology on how to assemble your characters, and storyline. When I say "assemble", I mean to create the brain and personality of your characters in your story, to make them more appealing, related to our own common world and situation, and something very important; to understand their purpose to do whatever action do in the story. When I say about storyline, it reveals a formula, more than a formula-a pattern, on how the biggest blockbuster films become that: the biggest hit on the screen.

All these film: gladiator, Pearl Harbor, titanic, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the rings, karate kid. All they share this common formula which is revealed in this book.
And I immediately i bought this book and use it not only in my low budget films I produce. You can apply this book Even for novels, and short stories. You will never going to regret this book.

great coverage, inspiring
By customer
This book is not only inspirational for screenwriters, helping them understand how various psychological theories actually work and could be applied to creating characters, but it is a very good, succinct overview of psychological theories in general. Reading this helps screenwriters to ground their work in how people actually function.

A must-have for any story writer
By Jeffrey L. Armbruster
A lot of food for thought here. The book describes various psychological theories (Freud, May, Jung) and applies them to creating characters and story. Good book. Why aren't there more books like this? Stories are about human behavior, human feelings; i.e.: psychology. Sheesh! Tons of books about format and structure, little on story content, character motivation.

I also recommend "Creating Chracters", by Howard Lauther.

This is a good series....I can't wait to see what happens next with Pepper and Dmitri.
By Sharon S
Strife (Books 1-3) by Sky Corgan
Designation: Parts 1-3 in a 7 part multi-book series….ends with a cliffhanger

So while I really like Sky Corgan’s style of storytelling once we get the whole story, it can be so frustrating when it ends in a cliffhanger, but at least in this case the whole series is completed and you don’t have to wait to get the rest of the story. This is actually a pretty short book at about 131 pages.

Book One: Pepper Kimbrough is in quite the predicament….she came to Hollywood to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress, but that hasn’t happened so she needs to get a job so she can go back to school since she has no family to help her. So she is trying to get a job as a high paid escort to keep a roof over her head and pay for college. She is just doing what she has to do to survive. On her first night she ends up leaving with a guy called Brodie Grant and although there is an attraction and had they met on a real date maybe something would have happened, these circumstances create a wall between them.

Book Two: Pepper/Alexis ended up spending the night with Brodie/Dmitri, but they don’t have sex. So her first night as an escort is not so bad, but she feels like she really didn’t do her job….not that she really wants to do the job to begin with. But she feels like a failure since he didn’t want her. Dmitri is in town to film a movie and really is interested in his co-star, Marie Overton, but when he thinks he will meet her, she doesn’t show and so he decides to spend another night with Alexis/Pepper.

Book Three: Dmitri knows that he cannot be seen with her since it could destroy his career, but at the same time he can’t not see her. Dmitri realizes he wants her even though she is paid to be there and if not for that she of course would be there since he is famous. When he finally admits this to her, it sends her over the edge again. She hides in the bathroom for an hour debating how she wants him, but it wasn’t the right time, but that is her job and she doesn’t get to pick the right time anymore. Again they don’t have sex.

I actually enjoyed the way this story played out. There were plenty of times that I wanted to yell at the characters. It seemed like just when things were going to work out they over thought things and put up walls. Of course Sky leaves us with a doozy of a cliffhanger and gosh darn it I’m going to have to get the rest of the series ASAP.

Hero: Dmitri Strife 5 stars
Heroine: Pepper “Alexis” Kimbrough 5 stars
Steam Level: 5 stars
Plot: 5 stars
Cliffhanger: yes

I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Designation: Compilation of the first three books of a multi-Installment Serial, Not A Standalone, Does include Cliffhangers
Author: Sky Corgan
My Rating: FIVE DELIGHTFULLY WICKED STARS *****
Sky Corgan is an exceptionally talented storyteller and one of my preferred go-to authors and her now completed Strife series is one of all-time favorite reads. I read this series as it was originally released, in installments, but Corgan has conveniently combined the first three installments of the seven part serial into one affordable set for your reading pleasure. This is a deliciously dark and enticingly provocative story which will hold you completely enthralled from beginning to end. I would very much like to share my reviews with you.
Yowza! Sky Corgan has gone and done it again! And just what has she done, you ask? She's dazzled her readers with yet another deliciously dark tale of hardship, angst and unexpected love. Sky Corgan is a master of her trade and knows exactly how to tease, tantalize and titillate her reader for maximum effect in order to create a wonderfully entertaining experience. Strife is an extremely well written dark and compelling romance with complex characters but what is most surprising in this story is the underlying element of humor which I find that I very much enjoy. The story is told in the first person by the two primary characters, Pepper Kimbrough and Dmitri Strife, with alternating his and her points of view by chapter which just happens to be my favorite style of storytelling. Although the story is classified as a dark romance, it's anything but gloomy. It's exciting, fast-paced, appealing, realistic, romantic and seductive. The characters as always shine brightly in Sky Corgan's work and these are no exception. They are fascinating, captivating, engaging, relatable, sexy as sin and sometimes quite humorous. Corgan skillfully combines these elements into an enticing and divinely entertaining experience for her readers.
Book One: Pepper Kimbrough came to Hollywood to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress. That was Plan A. Unfortunately, Plan A hasn't worked out so well. Of course, neither has her life but she's managed to survive, albeit by the skin of her teeth. She may not be innocent and vulnerable but she's definitely desperate. And hence, her current predicament - down on her knees with her head in James Sumner's lap with her mouth on his.... well, you know where her mouth is. Yep, this is now her life and this is what loosely passes for a somewhat questionable interview for a job - or at least she hopes. No, life certainly isn't beautiful, not for people like her - at least not yet. Sometimes, it's as ugly as your own worst nightmares and this is definitely one of those times. The only question: Is Pepper strong enough to survive it??? The memories of her past say no but her determination and inner strength say yes. Now it's time for Plan B: Please this jerkwad Sumner, get the job as a call girl making $500.00 an hour, save her money, go to college, then become rich and famous. But is she really willing to sell her body as well as her soul to accomplish her dream and yet somehow, still hang on to her sanity? Or ultimately risk her sanity to fulfill her dream? She's been through worse and it's not forever, right? Right!? She can do this and stay sane; she could be a escort/call girl, couldn't she? It's actually rather ironic since she had actually grown up rich and now she's only one breath away from homeless and starving. This is all worth it, isn't it? With only $9.03 left to her name, it has to be. She no longer has a choice. Or does she???
Rock Star Dmitri Strife has conquered the musical stage and now he's ready to conquer the big screen stage in Hollywood with his first starring role as Brodie Grant in the upcoming new movie, Master of Payback. He's just arrived and it's his first night in "tinsel town". His friend John is surprising him with a night on the town and it does turn out to be quite the shock. Instead of going to a club, John is taking him to a private brothel with beautiful babes galore, all willing to submit to his every desire. Oh my! But Dmitri has had his fill of endless nights of booze, never ending parties and meaningless sex with women always looking to use him as a means for fame and fortune. He doesn't wanted to be caught up in that nightmare again and almost leaves - until he sees her - the beautiful, blonde that wanders onto the balcony where he's hidden in the shadows. She looks so innocent and so sad. He can't help himself; he needs to know her name. But surprisingly when he approaches her, she doesn't seem to recognize him. He just won't tell her who he really is so he tells her his name is Brodie Grant, the name of his movie character, instead. This night may work out after all. Hmmm.... I wonder?????
Book Two:
Pepper, who has been given the moniker of Alexis by her boss James Sumner, spent her first night as an escort talking with Brodie/Dmitri and NOT having sex. Huh? Nope, no sex. During their night together, Pepper/Alexis confesses to Dmitri/Brodie that she was adopted but the day after graduating from high school, her parents kicked her out with only $700 and said they never wanted to see her again. What the heck? Pepper feels like a complete failure after not being able to seduce Dmitri/Brodie and begins to have serious doubts as to whether she can actually continue this job but unfortunately she's out of options so it's this or starve. But Pepper soon realizes that she may be in way over her head. Thirty five year old Dmitri Strife is very much looking forward to meeting his co-star, Marie Overton. It has long been his dream to meet and woo the beautiful sophisticated movie star and knows this is the perfect opportunity. Apparently she doesn't feel the same since she didn't even bother to show up for the cast luncheon so there will be no date tonight with Marie Overton. So, what's a handsome, successful heartthrob to do??? Request another night with Alexis/Pepper, of course!!! Oh my! And still, no sex! But strangely, Dmitri finds that he enjoys being with Alexis/Pepper and is drawn to beauty and her innocence and is somewhat puzzled by his feelings toward Alexis. He knows an association with her could be dangerous for his career but he can't seem to stop himself. He convinces himself that it's just the easy camaraderie he experiences with Alexis and nothing more.
Book Three:
Dmitri has started filming and finally meets his co-star but at first, Marie seems mildly interested in him. She leaves before he can ask her out. But is he still interested in her? Or would he rather spend time with Pepper? Hmm...Is his interest due to sympathy for Pepper's plight or possibly or is it real friendship he feels for the lovely young Pepper? Or could it be something more??? But the feelings Pepper/Alexis feel for Dmitri are far from friendly. Pepper/Alexis enjoys her time spent with Dmitri and more than a little attracted to him. She hopes to see him again and a small thread of hope is born that maybe, he may just feel something for her other than physical desire. James informs her that Dmitri has indeed requested her company again for the night. I wonder if Pepper/Alexis will be able to seduce Dmitri this time??? And yes, Pepper/Alexis now knows that Brodie lied to her about his identity and is really Dmitri Strife! Oh my goodness! No spoilers from me but I will say this...Beautiful young woman who came to Hollywood to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress but has fallen on hard times and is now broke and almost homeless-check! Handsome rock star who is tired of his life as a famous musician and has come to Hollywood for his first starring role in a movie-check! An unexpected meeting of two lost souls-check! Heated attraction, a little heartbreaking angst and hopefully a sweet romance-we'll see! That and a whole lot more! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

Strife 1,2, and 3

This is an ARC book given to me for my honest review. The story of Dimitri Stife also known as Brodie and Pepper Kimbrogh or Alexis. Pepper has had a bad life and thinks maybe as an Escort she can make enough money to improve her life but the first thing she has to do is give a blow job to the owner of the escort service. She find this distasteful but realizes that as an escort she will have to do it. Dimitri Strife is a rock star and is looking to make a movie. He wants to meet Marie Overton the star and make her his wife. He also thinks an alliance with her will help his career. So when his friend takes him to a house for an orgy he isn't interested. Then he meets Pepper on the balcony and somehow figures she is new to being an escort and is afraid. He takes her to his hotel and they just talk but she begins to like him. Each part takes about an hour to read and we can read both Dimitri and Alexa's mind. Each part slowly works up to her feelings growing and his as well. But he still has the dream of making Marie his wife. He is trying to be good and stay pure for Marie and Pepper is feeling like he doesn't find her attractive because he doesn't do anything.

For some reason Dimitri keeps requesting Pepper and she finds herself drawn to him but he seems to be rejecting her. They do have fun and talk a lot. She tells him a bit of her childhood but he doesn't say too much about himself. She can't even drink a glass of win with him because she is underage. But at his hotel room he mixes her drinks. Still he keeps his distance and it bothers her. Though they do cuddle and she just keeps getting more attracted to him. As usual Sky Corgan has a well written account of what happens between the two. Short easy to read quick books but about a minor entering the escort business. It is a very good series I think but is meant for mature readers over 18.

Gentlewoman: Etiquette for a Lady, from a Gentleman (BEREOLAESQUE), by Enitan O. Bereola II

Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown... Have you ever witnessed a Lady? Not a woman, but a Lady. She’s a girl by birth, woman by maturity and Lady by choice. Do you remember how the sight of a Lady made you feel? Did she smile at you? Could you feel her warmth? Do you remember her scent of comfort and truth? Can you recall how difficult it was explaining what you witnessed when she strolled by? Her high heels were music; her stride was a song. She walked in greatness influencing nations with each step. Do you remember your first time? Well, when was the last time you saw her? Her story isn’t being told. Her legacy is being watered down, and society is taking notes. She’s much more than a victim with hips. This story isn’t one of those "how to get a man" books or "he thinks he's right because he's a man" books. This took time. This is an etiquette book for women, written by a man–a crazy man, crazy over you and crazy enough to write for and about you. This is a State of Emergency! GENTLEWOMAN sets out to explore the demise of femininity and class in contemporary society. Unlike any other book, the author along with Hill Harper, Meagan Good, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Michelle Williams & more share insight to inform, educate and empower womanhood. It's fresh, fun and sexy uncommon sense advice designed to facilitate a necessary conversation amongst the sexes that leads to real solutions. Oh, and a man wrote it! “From selecting wines to selecting a mate, I am re-branding etiquette. Making manners beautiful, again.” –E.B. II CLASS is back in session! *GENTLEWOMAN is the #1 bestselling Etiquette Advice Guide on Amazon. Oprah Winfrey and The First Family are proud owners.

Michelle Williams
Destiny's Child Grammy Award-winning Singer/Songwriter; Actress; Philanthropist  1/3 of the Best-Selling Recording Group of all Time

"This is exciting. A lot of people have embraced stuff that really isn't what femininity should be about. Women should be who they are. Women need to be free to determine who they want to be. This book supports that."

a TRUE LOVE letter
By coco_chvnel
This book was an overwhelmingly beautiful read from beginning to end. Enitan Berola, despite being a very intelligent author was able to deliver this material in a very loving and caring manner. My most important take-away: KNOW YOUR WORTH. NEVER SETTLE. The book was clear cut, concise, at times blunt (but needed to be). It made me question my choices/actions, but also reminded me that even though I may have made not so great decisions in the past, it does not take away from the beauty of who I am today, I am not less in value. It also set a solid platform for what I strive to be today, tomorrow, and so on.

In a world where young girls and women are constantly questioning their beauty, their worth, their intelligence, etc. this book is a refreshing reminder that you are worthy because you were born. It is a confidence booster reminding women to walk tall with their heads held high, and to take back their crowns. I loved it so much I finished it in 3 days and am buying more to gift my teenage nieces, friends, and sisters with. I highly recommend this book and hope you too will enjoy it!

Good but disappointing...
By Whit
I read this book and although it is a good book, I believe most of the women who are reading it are already on the path set as an example of a gentlewoman. After all I ordered the book to see if there was something I, the average good God-fearing black woman could use to improve myself. Instead it just pointed out everything I was already aware of - very basic etiquette -Be nice, abstinence is good, take care of ones home and body. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Honestly the women who lack the etiquette noted in this book probably won't be buying it and reading it :/ Being an average gentlewoman, polite, pretty and able to support oneself financially is great, but this is common sense. I was looking for more inside knowledge on what sets the average woman apart from the rest. It's not a "how to get a man" book but it may be of interest to someone who has just got out of a breakup and needs a "pick me up" rather than someone who has been single for a long time.
I do believe MEN should be reading this book because just like a lot women don't believe good guys exist, many guys don't think good women are out there either so they settle for less.

Nothing EXTRAordinary
By Reese B.
I was so excited to get this book. The cover is intriguing...and the thought of reading a man's perspective on this subject really interested me. I must say: from the time I read the introduction to the 1st chapter, I almost put the book down altogether. It seemed very generalized and many of the points were repeated. I decided to champion on and read the book and what I found was nothing extraordinary. General points that most women already know--unless they have been hiding under a rock. I would, perhaps, recommend this book to you a young lady....maybe a teenager or someone in her very early twenties. For me, this was a disappointment. It's like that meal you're very much looking forward to that does not live up to expectations.
