This is the first story by Jill Barnett that I ever read ...

... and it got me started. I did not stop until I had sought out every one of her historical novels. It is a wonderful story, and the hero remains one of my favorites - not least because he is Irish and an ex-boxer. I love the story not only because of the characters but because of the fabulous sense of time and place. I felt like I was in turn of the century New York.
This story and novel 'Just a Kiss Away' are my absolute favorites of hers. I reread them regularly.

Fabulous, heart-warming story!

BOXING DAY was the first thing I had ever read by Jill Barnett years ago. I loved the story so much that it prompted me to buy and read her other books (her historicals are great!). I had read BOXING DAY in an anthology of short stories by variouos authors and this story really stuck with me. I just got a new Kindle and this was one of the first 2 stories I bought even though I already own the paperback. The first story I bought was another Christmas story by this author, DANIEL AND THE ANGEL.
From reading the first pages of the story I felt like I was actually in 1890's New York City, standing there looking at the gym and the cigar store and the neighborhood. The author's descriptions of the sights were that vivid. It was a nice change to read about an older heroine/younger man and really, who couldn't relate to Nellibelle's concerns about her body on her wedding night? The wedding night preparation scene made me laugh, as did other scenes in the story. You will love Conn and Nellibelle, you will laugh, cry and cheer for them as they discover each other and find their HEA.
I just finished re-reading this story last week but will be reading it again before Christmas. It's just the perfect story for a cozy night with a cup of hot tea, an endearing up-lifting story.

Not a favorite

Eleanor is a forty year old woman living in New York City who has never married and does not plan on it, ever. Eleanor falls really hard for a boxer who runs a gym in the building she owns. She has loved him from their very first short meeting, though never acted upon it and is frosty to him when they do encounter each other which is usually over the rent he owes her. Forget that they barely have conversations other than that and his crude teasing.
Conn Donnoughue is a rough around the edges boxer who gets somewhat frustrated with prickly Eleanor. He is less than pleased when she moves into the top floor of the gym. He is a man’s man and he does love to needle Eleanor.
The major hang up in this story is Eleanor’s age; she cannot get past it very easily (she is eight years older than Conn). She bemoans the fact, hates her age and pretty much lets the reader know that she is just too old for him. I got tired of this fairly quickly. She is forty not sixty, capable of having children and still looking forward to many more years in the 1890s. It was not 8th century Europe. I also had a hard time believing she was in love with him after only one meeting, that is lust not love. I just did not get the warm fuzzies from this couple
