Better than average explorer-adventure movie
By Paul Allaer
"The Lost City of Z" (2016 release from the UK; 141 min.) brings the true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett. As the movie opens, we are told it is "Cork, Ireland, 1905", and we get to know Major Fawcett and his wife Nina. Even though he wins the prestigious deer hunt event, he isn't highly regarded ("he choose the wrong ancestors", sneers one). The next year, Fawcett is transferred to the Royal Geographical Society in London, and it isn't long before Fawcett is asked/offered the opportunity to settle a border dispute between Bolivia and Brazil. Off he goes, and the adventure of a lifetime awaits. At this point we're 15 min. into the movie, but to tell you more of the plot would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.

Couple of comments: this is the big screen adaptation of the book of the same name, directed by James Gray (best known for his film "The Immigrant" a few years ago). Here, Gray gets the opportunity to bring an epic adventure to life. Indeed, once the story settles in South America, one cannot escape the gorgeous photography. But thankfully it's not just eye-candy, as the story telling is quite solid. In particular the second half of the movie soars, as we see what becomes of the quest for this legendary location. Along the way, we even get treated to a tough episode in WWI, shot with a veracity that rings true. Charlie Hunnam in the lead role of Percy Fawcett gets his meatiest role to date, and Sienna Miller is quite good as his wife Nina. But the big surprise is surely Robert Pattinson, unrecognizable as Fawcett's sidekick Henry Costin (it's only when I saw the end credits roll that I realized this was Pattinson). Last but not least, Christopher Spelman delivers a rousing orchestral score,

"The Lost City of Z" premiered last Fall at the New York Film Festival. It finally opened in theaters this weekend, I couldn't wait to see it. The Friday early evening screening where I saw this at was attended very nicely, somewhat to my surprise. If you are in the mood for a better than average exploration adventure movie, I'd readily recommend you check out "The Lost City of Z", be it in theaters, on Amazon Instant Video, or eventually on DVD/Blu-ray.

Explores the jungles in South America and in your mind
By Trina Boice
Grade: B+

Rating: PG-13, 140 minutes

In a Nutshell: This savage story features the true tale of Percival Fawcett and his dream to discover The Lost City of Z along the Amazon river in the early 1900’s.

Also explored is what makes people tick, their dreams, motivations, and how they hold on to hope.

Based on David Grann’s best-seller The Lost City of Z, it has the look and feel of one of those old-time exploration dramas and will remind you a little bit of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Uplifting theme:
Hope
Discovery
“To dream, to seek the unknown, to look for what is beautiful is its own reward.” – Nina Fawcett (Sienna Miller)
“We are all made of the same clay.” – Percy (Charlie Hunnam)
“A man’s reach should exceed his grasp.” - Nina Fawcett

Things I liked:

Good for British actor Charlie Hunnam! He did an excellent job in portraying a complex character who is brave, hopeful, and even reckless. He also stars in the upcoming King Arthur: Legend of The Sword: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack movie. He has been in several movies and TV shows, but people are just now starting to really take notice of his wide range of talent. As the newest hunk to get attention, he doesn't take his shirt off in this film, but he does in King Arthur, ladies.
There is an interesting USA vs. England dimension as the two countries raced to explore and discover the world first in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Twilight fans of Robert Pattinson will see him in a new light if they even recognize him at all underneath all that beard and hair.
I loved that Percy became quite humble and respectful of the land and people he explored, as opposed to his contemporaries, both American and British who arrogantly called the natives "savages."
While Sienna Miller plays the dutiful wife, she also has some great moments when she reveals graceful wisdom and insight.
Spiderman! Tom Holland, who stars in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming - The Art of the Movie, does a great job as Percy's eager son.
There's a smoky, old-fashioned air to how the movie is filmed that adds to the eery feeling.
At the end of the movie, text on the screen tells you how the story ended.
It's a fascinating character study on what makes men cowards and others brave.

Things I didn’t like:
Some of the dialogue is pretty weak. The movie was written and directed by James Gray.
It drags on a bit. Experts who like that might call it "methodical pacing."
It's really hard to avoid people suffering in a variety of ways in an exploration story like this. Wounds, illness, fighting, drowning, being eaten by piranha, arrows, sacrifice, etc.
I never saw a single trailer for this movie before it played. The marketing was extremely thin.

Interesting lines:
“All that matters now is the future.” – Percy
“Nothing will happen to us that is not our destiny.” – Percy
“Have fun and be bold.” – Nina (that's the same advice I give my sons!)
“So much of life is a mystery, my boy. We know so little of this world.” – Percy
“It’s not possible to choose a safe passage through life.” – Jack Fawcett (Tom Holland II)
“We’ve never let fear determine our future.” – Nina
‘It’s his essential nature. Who am I to betray that?” – Nina Fawcett (Sienna Miller) when she decided to let her son go on a voyage with his father
“Peace means only that nothing will change.” – Spanish guy at beginning
“Am I a fool to leave my family for this place?” - Percy

Tips for parents:
Topless native women
Profanity
There are subtitles you’ll need to read to kids who can’t keep up.
Violence and brutality. Some people die in horrible ways.

“To look for what is beautiful is its own reward”
By Doug Park
{3.5 stars}

Many people will approach this film expecting to see a riveting historical adventure. While there is a great deal of compelling exposé of Percy Fawcett and crew‘s exploration of the Amazon, encounters with Indians, wild beasts, and so forth, as well as some tense battle scenes of the WWI Battle of the Somme, those people are likely to be disappointed in the end. “The Lost City of Z” is more of a philosophical think-piece and character study of a tragic hero than anything else. The story of how Percy Fawcett must find the Lost City that he has no certainty actually exists, even when it means probable death and neglect of his own family, is thought-provoking, but no more so than many other films of this type. We don’t really empathize that much with Fawcett‘s obsessions, mainly because the film doesn’t make the unexplored Amazon seem terribly alluring, nor does it really show what makes him so confident the City is out there somewhere.

Some plot-holes and ambiguities, but nothing just ruinous. LCZ is basically watchable, with some pronounced draggy spots. Yet, it lacks that necessary something it needs to make it truly satisfying. The whole mood of the film is somber in a way that’s likely to lose much of the audience. There have also been some criticisms of its lack of historical accuracy. I’m not really sure of the real story, but like most “docudramas,” LCZ should certainly be taken with a dose of salt.

All this being said, the acting by all is quite good, and Charlie Hunnam (Fawcett) is an actor we’re likely to see more of in the future. Same for the cinematography and directions, particularly in how LCZ utilizes details of its setting in time: It really takes us back to the early 1900s.

Needs Revision
By Thomas M Basch, MD
My son's high school counselor recommended this book six years ago, and I have bought it for all three of my children. I think it contains dozens of universal truisms, and presents them via athletics, which of course makes for an attractive narrative in the eye's of teenage boys. However, since the book's publication, several of the athletes whom the author has very prominently featured have betrayed fans, family, and themselves. Some have used steroids and other performance drugs, and have lied about it. Others have cheated on spouses. My boys notice this, and in turn question the validity of the author's blueprint for success. I think the book needs updating. If particular sports figures are to be set up as examples, these figures had better be the real deal. Otherwise, the book's credibility will be called into question by teens and young adults who, for good reason, are already skeptical and cynical.

I think there are some great nuggets of wisdom with this book
By Alexandra Scarpello
I think there are some great nuggets of wisdom with this book, but also a disappointing lack of application. It was recommended to me by two different people, so I thought i'd give it a try. It is mostly anecdotes and stories about famous people, which is completely fine, but I was hoping for a few more actual processes on how to think like these pros and how to get into the head spaces that work for these people. Still, I do think the book contains a decent amount of groundwork and it did help me, even if it was a little less than Id have liked.

Kept me from quetly weeping myself to sleep for months
By Barbara T
I played roller derby for 5 years, took 3 years off, and then came back expecting to pick up where I left off. That didn't happen. I was really out of shape, and relearning the game was HARD. The whole experience was just so demoralizing I was about to give up, when I found this book. I didn't grow up playing sports, so I was unfamiliar with the mental game. Mind Gym helped me change my mindset to look at myself as a champion instead of an old, out of shape has-been. I'm still no roller derby rock star, but I approach every practice and workout with positivity and focus. I bring the same kind of energy to my team dynamics, and it's just made my life better. A lot of the principles in this book can also be applied to life in general, and you'd be winning at that too! This book is good for athletes at any level, and probably humans in general who want to get better at life.

Covers birds throughout the world
By Chris Gregory
This encyclopedia is thorough in its descriptions and photographs of birds throughout the world. However, the text may have tried to take on too much, as it left out several birds in various regions. Several game birds of North America were neglected. Those included the white-tailed ptarmigan, the spruce or Franklin's grouse (aka: fool hen), mountain quail, Gambel's quail, bobwhite, scaled quail, ruffed grouse, sharp-tailed grouse, both the blue and green winged teals, just to mention a few. Also the Chukar was identified as the rock partridge.

Nevertheless, there is a great deal of scientific information for those studying birds around the world, their habitats, habits, nomenclature, and illustrations.

About the Author
Luke Romyn was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1975. His life since reads like something out of his novels: heavily entrenched in personal trauma, action, thrills, and adventure.

For over two decades, Luke has worked in the security industry; from bouncing in some of Australia's roughest pubs and nightclubs to protecting Mickey Mouse and the Disney crew from the overzealous jaws of tenacious toddlers. He's been bodyguard for celebrities internationally and chased feral pigs and snakes from jungle sets on Steven Spielberg productions. Luke has traveled the globe and spent time in some of the most amazing locations the world has to offer.

This experience fuels the Australian writer's ever-expansive imagination, and he pours it into his novels, combining fact with fiction, history with fantasy, delivering engrossing action-thrillers which leave fans gasping for more. Luke's quick wit has seen his social media following explode, and he is currently one of the most prolific social media celebrities in Australia, with several hundred thousand followers across the internet.

Publishing his first book, The Dark Path, in 2009 saw it voted in the top 10 horror novels of that year, even though Luke denies ever intending the novel to be classed as horror. Luke Romyn is now one of the most popular indie authors in the ever-growing eBook market and personally completes everything from cover art to final formatting, working tirelessly with editors so as to refine the best stories possible for his readers. The results are international bestsellers you're certain to love diving into. Hundreds of thousands of readers can't be wrong.

Romyn is BACK and Bigger than Ever!
By Claude Bouchard, The Vigilante Series
Well past 3D, Romyn's imagination can best be described as multi-dimensional. When I read the two volumes of his Prometheus series, I was impressed not only with the research which had gone into his work but also with the ease he melded reality with myth, successfully creating a believable storyline for all willing to open their minds.

So now Romyn decides to widen the scope and takes on perhaps the greatest myth of all... God, Christ, the Bible, a few popular angels, one of them fallen, and throws them all together into a fast-paced thriller taking place all over the world... And beyond? Oh yeah... Bring in a little bit of Vain from The Dark Path for good measure...

Does Romyn succeed? YES!

A very great read!!!
By Joanne Chase
Luke Romyn is not your run-of-the-mill Indy author, his books have a literary quality that I find rare among the kindle books available today. His writing goes beyond the quick-grab easy book, and into a realm that is well thought out and incredibly well written.

In Corpus Christi, he draws the reader in slowly, moves the prose along well, and brings it to a crescendo of amazing proportions. This book is a gem that deserves attention. Good work!

Luke doing what he does best.
By GreenRaven
As I am reading Corpus Christi I was wondering if Luke released it at this time to cover Easter weekend. No wait, it's been out for a bit. Should I wonder about why I am reading it now? The protagonist in this work has even more reason to wonder about the things he encounters and that is where Luke grabs us and will not let us go.

This book is what Luke does best. Challenging our perceptions of religion and mythology while giving us engaging characters. These are characters with a compelling back story. The ones we hold close. We feel their pain, glow at their accomplishments and support them at every step.

Luke's descriptive passages come with a cadence of their own. My heart beats with the rhythm and my breathing quickens with anticipation of the outcome.

I curse Luke on a daily basis as I am so engrossed I almost miss my train or tram stop, or I know I need to let go and go to sleep. The story will not wait.

5 STAR SCORE FOR LUCY!
By Carolyn
This one is so hard for me to review because I think I fell in love with this book, characters and author. I don't want to write the review because it's like me closing the door, turning my back on these people and I don't want to.

Harper was intelligent, strong, resilient and hilarious. I loved her sharp tongue, her quick wit, but her compassion, honesty, sincerity was top notch. Getting the heck out of dodge when she flees a cheating boss/boyfriend, Harper ends up a lively little town, hours away from her intended destination. The initial meeting with the main characters was a great scene showcasing what a spitfire Harper was going to be in the townspeople's lives. Hometown hero Luke Garrison is taken aback at how Harper "jumps right" in to the aid of others, never caring what it might mean for her own safety. Living a bachelor life after trying to recover from a devastating past, hunky Luke is the target of his family's matchmaking and soon takes Harper as a fake girlfriend to keep his family off his back until he deploys with his National Guard Unit to Afghanistan in a month. Harper also has a tragic past and these two kindred spirits soon have a deep, yet passionate, connection Luke is finding hard to fight.

Harper is a character that I won't forget. A foster child after losing her parents in a car accident at the age of 7, passed through the foster system until she ages out, physical abuse, alone in this world and always ready for a challenge, Harper was a go getter, a rescuer, a helper, a friend, a listener, and all she wanted back was for someone to be the same for her, to protect her, save her, love her. Luke is so drawn to her, his family, the town, no one can help but fall for this amazing, generous woman with a heart of gold who has lived a life of ashes.

Luke just can't give her what she needs and wants, himself. The story into his past was sad, heart wrenching and one worthy of a happy ending. These characters all were ones who deserve another story and I hope Lucy Score gives them one. I know I will read it!

Terrific heroine, sub par hero.
By Boutrosbabe
Pretend You're Mine is a fairly well written book with a heroine I truly enjoyed. Harper Wilde is a self-aware firecracker of a woman who doesn't shy away from saying the hard thing - or doing it. She tends to take life on fully, and I admired that about her. Hero Luke Garrison, however, cannot say the same thing. He hides from everything in his life. His interactions with his family, his feelings for Harper, the damage caused by his last relationship... everything. He was not very heroic or particularly charming.

The book follows Harper primarily as she turns a crappy day into a pretty good life. She shows up in Luke's hometown with no money, cell phone, gas for her car, clothes, or ID. She caught her bf/boss cheating and just runs away. No time is spent mourning the relationship which I didn't understand at first but which made more sense once I learned that Harper is a roll-with-the-punches sort of girl. After stopping at a small town bar (where she immediately attacks a guy in the parking lot who is roughing up a girl), she gets set up with Luke who will give her a place to stay (his own bed), take her to get the stuff from her apartment, and give her a full time job as an office manager (without even asking her if she is capable of doing the work). This was one of the reasons the book only received three stars. It was all just so over the top lucky/convenient that it was hard to suspend my disbelief. Why not just give her cash for a hotel and gas?

Logic issues aside, the best bits of this book are Harper's thoughts as she falls in love with Luke, his family, and the town in which she finds herself. She knows he is emotionally stunted, accepts that, and decides to go all in anyway. She chooses to experience all the joy she can before the inevitable pain sets in. It's nice to see that kind of bittersweet self-awareness in a character, as well as one who doesn't try to change the hero.

The two have good sexual chemistry in their many open door sex scenes. I do wish the author proofread her scenes more thoroughly, though, as more than once there were continuity errors (as in, he takes her underwear off before they get on the bed, and then once on the bed, he takes her underwear off. Again). Scenes like these are why authors pay me to content edit their work.

**SPOILER ALERT**

The other reason the book received only three stars was the way in which Luke "saved" Harper. She is under threat from her ex-foster dad who is about to be released from prison, where her testimony sent him. Behind Harper's back Luke gets in touch with the cop who worked Harper's case and together they set up a sting operation in which they get the guy to confess his assault conspiracy actions and he gets put away, presumably for the rest of his life.

No. NO NO NO.

Why create a strong, intelligent heroine, only to wimp out and have someone else save her? Harper was more than capable of catching that guy in his own confession herself, and she should have. She is not written as a damsel. She did not need rescuing. I get that Luke needed a grand gesture to prove he was serious about being with Harper, but this wasn't it. It left a bad taste in my mouth as I read it.

Also, I think Harper forgave Luke too easily for the really crappy things he said to her. Being unable to love due to a damaged past is one thing; being deliberately cruel is another thing entirely. Luke's comments to Harper while they were breaking/broken up were way over the line. She should have throat punched him.

In the end, I enjoyed the writing of this book enough that I read another book by this author (Undercover Love. It's not as good as this one, and I won't be reviewing it). I think Pretend You're Mine shows growth by the author in skill; I would be willing to read future works by her. If you're in the KU program, this book isn't a bad way to spend an afternoon. If you love big families and small towns or spunky heroines who rarely take people's crap, you might enjoy this one.

2.5 STARS...Harper was awesome, but Luke was THE WORST
By RedRedtheycallmeRed
This book felt unnecessarily long to me. In the middle of the book, Luke goes on a six month deployment and there are lots of mundane details that I really didn't care about. Harper plants a garden. Harper does some landscaping. Harper does some redecorating to Luke's house. I think a good editor could have made some cuts to gain a tighter story. The beginning was strong (and much funnier, the humor got less and less through the course of the book), but it got more meandering the further it went along.

Harper was a pretty awesome character, except for her bad taste in men. She was funny, sweet and unfailingly optimistic. It was easy to see why the town liked her so much. Luke, on the other hand, I just kept wanting to punch some sense into his stupid head. He's constantly going on about how Harper gets herself into trouble, like he's her keeper? She's clearly been doing ok, and it just made him seem condescending. He tells her he can't ever fall in love with her ("she deserves better than me", barf), but has no issue with her moving in, adopting dogs together, and having sex with her 24/7. He finally breaks her heart, but he's still possessive, getting mad when he sees her with other guys and blowing up her phone all the time. And then at the end he has to rescue her from a scary situation (which screamed, THIS ISN'T LEGAL) because of course she wouldn't be able to save herself.

As for Luke's "big secret"? 1) It is in no way believable in that busybody town that someone wouldn't have let it slip to Harper. She was there for like eight months! 2) It's been five years, and you are not the thing the universe revolves around, Luke. Get over yourself.
